My youngest son is expecting his first child (which we know is a girl) any day. Due today, but she will be induced Friday week if she doesn’t go into labor first. Naturally, I’m thinking of all the photos I’m going to take of my new granddaughter when they bring her home (unfortunately grandparents are not allowed at the hospital due to the virus). My Fuji is a lot easier to carry than my Canon FF, but since I understand flash is not good for newborns (who knew?), I’ve been thinking that I don’t have a fast lens of just the right FL for available light, so, in the best UHH GAS tradition, I just ordered a Fuji XF 50mm f2 from KEH, which should be just right, and here Thursday, just in time. The moral is: any excuse will do to buy a new lens 😈.
Congratulations on your upcoming family addition and for thinking ahead regarding your gear. As a grandfather of 5 and great-grandfather of 3, I know how important it is to have the right gear ready for whenever opportunities occur. Enjoy!
TriX, a new lens? This kind of event could call for an entire new kit. That is camera lens, flash, etc.
Congratulations to them and I hope it's an easy delivery of a very healthy baby.

Congratulations on your soon to arrive granddaughter!! I can't wait for photos!!
I have a different view of GAS right now....Life is too short and we are not promised tomorrow. I have wanted a Nikon D810 for a long time and due to financial issues purchased a D750 because of the price difference instead. Don't get me wrong...I love the 750 and it will continue to work alongside the 810 unlike my 7000 which sits in the bag.
Three weeks ago my neighbor's parents arrived home from running errands. The father got out of the vehicle, took about 10 steps, bent down to get the newspaper and died of a stroke right there. Had the stroke occurred a few minutes earlier on the 7 lane road he could have injured/killed many innocent people including his wife.
My 810 arrived 2 days ago.
Please give new granddaughter hugs and kisses from me and tell her I said, "Welcome to the world!"

Thanks Dodie, those are almost exactly my thoughts also. I’m reminded of that old adage that no one on their death bed wished they had worked harder and saved more in their lives. When I first retired, I was ultra frugal , not being accustomed to a fixed income and more than a little fearful, but after five years, I’m lightening up a little - might drop dead tomorrow like your friend.
As we get older, fresh, new lives are so exciting and make the acceptance of our own decline so much more bearable and actually comforting - a reaffirmation of the natural order. I can’t wait to see her.
Congratulations on a new granddaughter and lens. I know a couple people who has transitioned from FF Canons to Fuji. Mostly a weight thing due to age and one guy with a bum shoulder.

Thanks. i’m Keeping the Canon system, but slowly adding lenses to the Fuji for exactly the reason you mention - size/weight.
Congratulations, and happy shooting. I have six, three and three, who began arriving before the onset of digital cameras. I used a lot of film back then.
Something that most grandparents would admit to have noticed: so many new arrivals apparently have Edward G Robinson DNA! Thankfully it’s overridden in time.
That is a great excuse! Congrats and good luck to all !!
Great that you are being considerate of getting a fast lens & not using a flash on a baby. I also wanted to photograph my newborn in 2006, and did every day by available light only. The 50 f2 on the Fuji is a good start, though I would be more prone to have a 2.8 zoom, as 50 may be a bit longish at times, or a bit shortish at others.
Grand kids are great for photo ops. My camera is never far away when they are visitingand always goes in the back yard with us. I seems they get so big so fast. My grand mother was always saying your getting so big when I'd visit now I know why. I already had a lens sufficient for them but by birthday was coming up. I wanted to get a wide angle (tamron 15-30) for my D810. How much my wife says. $xxxx I say. That sounds like a christmas present not a birthday. I'm not about to question the reasoning but here's to hoping christmas is early this year.
