Right. The general point being, why add an extra syllable or word that contradicts oneā€™s intended meaning? A similar example is something like, ā€œI donā€™t have no money,ā€ which literally means that I do have money.

Actually, ā€œI couldnā€™t care less,ā€ may be an accurate expression of what some one means, e.g., I care so little that I could not care any less. Therefore no contradiction ā€” the expression means what it says.

On the other hand, if one said, ā€œI could care less,ā€ that would mean there is room for me to care even less, which may contradict the intended meaning.

The ā€œcouldnā€™tā€ form is the only one that makes sense in the context the expression is generally used.
