Crap, I just noticed this post has reached five pages. If I had seen that sooner I wouldn't have bothered. Irregardless here it is.

BTW, when I typed "irregardless" why does it have a red line under it?

Because it’s not recognized as a word.
But hey, you started it.😳

Just like inflammable means not flammable.[/quote

Right. The general point being, why add an extra syllable or word that contradicts one’s intended meaning? A similar example is something like, “I don’t have no money,” which literally means that I do have money.
Inflammable does NOT mean not flammable. Inflammable and flammable have the same meaning.

The “couldn’t” form is the only one that makes sense in the context the expression is generally used.

Either that or I’m too serious!

Do incorrect and correct have the same meaning?

Here's how I see it. My grammar is never perfect but the teachers taught it, I went to school and learned it. Some went to the same school, same teachers and refused to learn it. That's OK if that's what they want but please Lord duct tape my fingers so I can't type what I'd really like to say about it.
Grammar, yes... typing....whoa!! I try to type too fast and that alone causes me to become the World Grand Champion Typo Queen.

No. Why do you ask?
There are a lot of oddities in the English language; the “flammable” “inflammable thing is just one of them.

Because someone said flammable and inflammable mean the same.

I can't believe that a bunch of relatively intelligent people have spent so much time and effort on such trivial nonsense.

We must have too much time on our hands!

Occasionally having a little play time with words can be fun.

It is listed as a nonstandard word. That said, it has been used for over 200 years, so it is understood and accepted as a word.

My mother always used that term and so did one of the guys I worked for.

If my mother was still alive she would be 107 years old. Finally she can rest in peace.

Much like the word "preventative". The word is "preventive". It bugs me all the time when I hear people say it wrong, and don't have the education to realize the error. So, even though it is incorrect, now it appears that they are interchangeable words. as well.

Or maybe you are not as smart as you think you are!

"However, preventative is no Johnny-come-lately, showing definite use for over 350 years now."
