I recently experienced the same problem. I've used LR 5.7 since it was distributed. I was running out of storage space on my laptop but my laptop was operating great but was getting slower because of the storage issue. I decided to swap out my hard drive and replace it with a 2T Samsung sold state drive (SSD). I cloned my hard drive to the SSD and retained all my photos and operating systems including LR 5.7. It's an easy process using the downloaded free software from Samsung. I also increased my RAM last year and now my 6 year old laptop runs like it's new. Samsung's website has the instructions to complete this upgrade. It's also inexpensive. The 2T SSD was about $240 and increasing the RAM was about $200.

Yet they buy the latest computers $$$$ and cameras $$$$ but can't justify the ¢¢¢¢ it costs to upgrade to and maintain current software. It's like buying a brand new Aston Martin but trying to devise a means to use the tires you saved when you junked your Prius. SMH . . .

Starting with LR 4 in 2012, I've spent $255.96 on LR. If I had been paying a subscription all those years, I would have spent $1,036.80. Yes, I like pinching pennies.

And yes, I know the subscription wasn't available in 2012.

Ok that is Lightroom. But the subscription includes LR Classic, and Photoshop, And Lightroom Mobile and Adobe Portfolio. So making the comparison to LR alone is not a good compairson.

What if you had LR and Photoshop since 2012? How much would you have spent?

Almost everyone forgets that the subscription includes the full, always current Photoshop as well as other software besides just Lightroom.

The other point of course is, sticking with an old unsupported version caps raw support, and limits functionality that newer updates added.

FWIW: I don’t want to smack my forehead and proclaim, “I could have had a V-8!”
