That would be the only "alteration" of an image it would do.

that is what it is for, basically to keep direct sunlight off the front of the lens, aside from that, it is just a pain in the butt.. I never use it.. Ed

How often do you use a lens hood? Other than bright sunlight is there a good reason to use? Thanks for any ideas the Hogs have.

Always! Protection for front lens element.

Protects the lens from things including your finger.

I always use a hood except when it may get in the way of my shooting such as macro or using a polarizer. They are essential for protection, reducing flair, and increasing contrast.

No, it will not alter the photo. The lens hood does 2 things. It prevents light from hitting the glass of the lens. And if you bump the lens into a wall or whatever, then what you bump into will hit the lens hood instead of the front of the lens. Thus preventing damage

You can purchase the proper size to screw into your polarizer.

if you have the sun behind you, you should not need a lens hood...but whatever....

Just about always use a hood. Not only for physical protection for the lens but to insure maximum contrast in the final image. I also use some pretty old lenses and glare is always a risk. For those, I use rubber hoods which fold back when not in use.
Stay safe,
Bob

Always except for on-camera flash (casts a shadow).

Lens hood is very helpful and actually is one piece of gear relatively inexpensive. I will say that you get to appreciate the hood by using it. Everyone has said they like it’s help in bright sunshine and also the hood guards your lens from some trauma. I will also warn you the lens hood can be tricky in the way it screws on since if it isn’t exactly on threads you can see it fall off. I have seen mine fall 20 feet down into a deep space between rocks as I shot Missouri’s Whitewater races.
