How often do you use a lens hood? Other than bright sunlight is there a good reason to use? Thanks for any ideas the Hogs have.

I Always us a lens hood. It also is a great front lens element protector.

For one thing, it protects the lens from harm.

Always. If the lens is mounted for purposes of photography, the hood is placed in the proper position for photography.

I always have one on my lens.
Helps protect the front of the lens, and since it stores backwards on the lens, I just turn it around.

Another always, every lens. (Ex. when using flash)

Thanks all. I think I need to study some on the uses of it.

Am I to understand it is a tool in your box. It can be used to alter the photo?

You need to quote reply so the individual knows to whom you are directing the question.

Almost always. It protects the lens.

Only exception is when using flash...which for me is rare.

Always without exception. Whenever I see someone not using one I think to myself "there goes an amateur". With that said, I agree it does tend to get in the way if you are using the camera's built-in flash. And occasionally I forget that because I don't want to look like an amateur.

All the time. They protect the lens. Just make sure the hood is the right one for the lens and does not cause vignetting. They help keep fingerprints and water off the front of the lens, etc

It's used to keep unwanted light from hitting the front of the lens and creating unwanted reflections/flare.
That would be the only "alteration" of an image it would do.
