Jay, on the last photo, that guy in the hard hat looks like a giant. What give with that? He is head and shoulders over the rest of the people. Just curious. You photos are great. I have always wanted to take that trip.

You are right! He does look oddly, larger.
He is what he is. No tricks or editing (I don't know how).
He's a big guy.
I was standing a ways away. Zoomed in a little. Probably, cropped a little.

Some hiker/campers were going to get off about half way.
Backpacks stored away.

In the past I've seen a group of fishermen that we picked up on return trip.

Once in the fall, stopped to pickup some hunters. They had a couple of large ices chests and a set of fresh elk antlers. They were going to Silverton.

So, stops are common.

Hoping to take a ride in the near future when we come over for a visit.
Hope you like pic of one of ours in the UK. This one held the world speed record for a steam engine.

Jim!! You have got to tell what the speed is!!!
Cool looking engine!
There is another steam train that is not too far from Durango. It should be considered, as well.
Check this link. It is from last year (2011).

The train ride fom Durango to Silverton is a awesome experience. We stayed in a RV park just north of town and the train passed right next to the park and you could hear the whistle when he was leaving town. Nice pictures you took of the engines.I can't wait to ride it again and also The Toltec and Charma.

I went back and looked at your image, again.
Those are very large drive wheels!!! Do you know how tall they are?

Did this engine run fast speeds all the time?
I would think it would have to slow down for curves.
If the rail were not laid perfectly flat, it could be a rough ride......
