Hi bigben,
You've already gotten many answers to the question of "charging straight to the camera" you posted. I only offer a word of caution - I have a couple of P&S cameras that charge to the camera via the USB port. The problem I ran into was the USB port on the side of the camera getting loose after multiple charges. I've since bought external chargers for the camera(s) that came to me with only the USB charging option. Take care & ...

Yup. Must be tiring to be in a foul mood so much of the time.

I have read that even on cameras that have this feature, charging via USB is not advisable because of the small but real chance of frying the main board in the camera.

Out of curiosity, I downloaded the D7200 manual to see if there was any reference to charging the battery via the USB port. I could not find any reference to the use the the USB port under any circumstances, It is not listed in the manual Table of Contents or the Index at the rear of the manual. The only reference I could find was just that it could be used to connect to a high speed USB connection. In the section on cleaning the image sensor, it was not listed as a reliable power source. I imagine charging typical high capacity camera batteries will generate heat that could cause damage if done internally. Unless the manufacturer specifies this as an option, it should be avoided! I have a D7100 and I just use the external charger that came with it.

I was told that I could plug the micro USB plug from my phones AC wall charger adapter directly into the micro USB input on my Nikon D7200. Is this true? Every night before bed I plug my phone in to be charged. It would be great to do the same for my camera, without having to take the battery out, place it in the charger and then plug that into the wall.

The port on the camera is not a charging port. Charge the battery in the charger made for the battery.

The usb port is for image transfer only.

Usb ports are 5 vdc. The battery is 7 vdc. Even if the camera had the charging circuitry, the voltage would have to equal the battery to charge it.

I am sure you can not do that! If you buy a charger for the battery that accept USB power then you can but you still have to remove the battery.
None of the Nikon DSLR I know were designed to be charged with its USB port. Most can accept external power to power the camera not for charging but with a different connection and not the USB port.

You have a valid question. Some cameras can be recharged with a USB cable, but even for those that can I don't think that it's the best solution. Unless the owners manual specifically states that USB charging can be done let's consider it as a bad idea. I keep several batteries on hand that are fully charged and swap as necessary.

I checked my manual and another source. Seems I canโ€™t charge my batteries inside the camera. My P510 can, but not my D7200. It would be handy, but I have 2 spare batteries and I just rotate them thru the charger instead.

If I am overseas and for whatever reason I do not have the proper outlet, I would have a need for charging in camera. I can think of at least 5 other reasons. I usually do not respond to all of the bickering going on, but the same things are sprouting up all over where people only concern themselves with criticism and not helping. Maybe this is not the place for me.

I guess you know by now that you need to use a charger.

The person who told you that you could charge the battery in your camera might have a camera that works that way. We see it all the time where people assume that if their camera can do something, they all can.

I was annoyed when I bought a camera years ago (I think a Sony) that had no separate charger available. I bought my first third party battery just to get a charger.

We all have our own preferences.
