While it is known as “poke sallet” or “poke salad”, poke leaves have to be cooked in a particular way before eating - never eat them raw in a salad.
From the web:
“Pokeweed poisoning is no joke. According to Penn State Hershey, poison ingredients Phytolaccatoxin and Phytolaccigenincan be found in the root system, leaves, and stems of the weed. A small amount can found in the dark purple berries. Within 6 hours of ingestion, symptoms may include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, low blood pressure, slow or difficulty breathing, weakness, and a rapid pulse.“

The Berries do make a fantastic fabric dye, depending on the strength light to very dark purple.
My first wife used to dye feed sacks with natural dyes and we traded them at Rendezvous
Goldenrod for yellow, and many more that I can't remember all were gathered locally.
