Hi Redford,
When I bought my T3i body, I didn't take the kit lens because I already owned the same lens which came with my T1i. I opted for the 55-250 zoom instead. More recently I purchased the 18-135 zoom and have found that it meets my needs so well that it hasn't come off the camera except when I'm shooting flowers, butterflies etc. Then I opt for the 100mm macro. I really haven't done much shooting with the 55-250 zoom but I would take it along if I was shooting great landscapes that had far distances. I am happy with each one of the Canon lenses.

I agree with the posters who suggested the original complainant might want to have his T3i body checked out by a good Canon repair shop. It sounds to me like he has a serious issue with his particular camera. But generally speaking the T3i is an excellent camera among the stable of top-rated Canon digital products.

When you use you 18-55 are you near the 55 often if so check out a nifty-fifty 50mm I have a cheap on 99bucks I don't love it but I have a 70 200 2.8 there is no going back if you like zoom but the 50 is affordable and fun.

I have a Canon T3i, which I am very happy with. However, the 18-55mm kit lens, ($200), I got with it does not seem to have the sharpness I desire. My camera shop suggested a Canon 10-22mm, ($760) or a Tamron 10-24mm, ($450).
When I tried both of these lenses, I got the same result from both, that is, the sharpness wasn't as good as my kit lens and both lenses underexposed the images slightly.
The guys at the camera shop had no explanation for me, so I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who can offer up what might be happening. Very frustrating.

Look at the Tokina 12-24. A much sharper lens in the middle of the price range.

Just curious folks, I have a 10-22 canon it is fantastic to stand at a trunk of the tree and get the entire tree but I find if I use it for people I have to be right in their face. If your not everything is micro sized in comparison to my 18-135 or the 70-200 the 50 is better.
Do any of you really use the 10-22 for people. You show an example. I like the lens I was just wondering if I am getting the most out of it!

Nobody really uses a 10-22 for people. You use that lens for landscapes and interior home real-estate. Depending on the crop factor of your camera - most use between a 50 and 100 for portraits / people photos. OK - - I did say MOST.

Debann ,sorry to be a pita but what quality 18-135mm lens did you purchase. A kit quality one or an upgraded one? (price?)I imagine you can still take closeups of flowers etc.with it,but not macro. The macro lens would be a future purchase after the purchase of T3i and i love to take them of flowers, bugs& whatever, which i do with my canon sx40. Thanks again for your help.

Redford, the lens is a Canon EFS 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS. I paid $450 for it in Toronto. It's the lens I used to shoot the cover picture in my earlier post. I've had no problems with it.

. . . .or you might use it for a huge group photo but not for individual portraits.

Thank you for the reply. I like it for say a view of a vineyard but even like a city view everything is so micro in it! The most impressive thing it does for me is stretch the sky in the photos. It adds depth it seems like. Again thank you for the comments

Are you using autofocus?
If so which mode?
Have you tried focusing manually?
Autofocus is frequently "fooled" because it focuses on the wrong point(s)
Answering these questions might help someone figure out what is going wrong. Misalignment of the lens or a misaligned sensor do not seem likely to me.
A couple of sample images may also help.

A Canon 85mm f/1.8 is only $369.
It is one of four most recommended portrait lenses.

50mm
85mm
24-70mm
70-200mm
