I have a Canon T3i, which I am very happy with. However, the 18-55mm kit lens, ($200), I got with it does not seem to have the sharpness I desire. My camera shop suggested a Canon 10-22mm, ($760) or a Tamron 10-24mm, ($450).
When I tried both of these lenses, I got the same result from both, that is, the sharpness wasn't as good as my kit lens and both lenses underexposed the images slightly.
The guys at the camera shop had no explanation for me, so I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who can offer up what might be happening. Very frustrating.

Wow! I find that hard to believe as I own three macro lenses all which are as sharp as a tack, and I would have put the 10-22 into the same class as my marcro lenses as far as sharpness goes... Are you sure that you are properly using it, the 10-22 is often said to be as sharp as any L glass that Canon makes and I having owned one I would tend to agree, I only sold it because I was not using it very much and decided that the additional range of the 15-85 made more sense for me.... but that 10-22 was probably one of the very best lenses I have ever owned...

Thanks for replying. I too was very surprised. I had my camera on a tripod and used a remote release. I put it in mirror lockup. I was in Av mode, with it set on center/spot focus. I would take a picture with each lens without changing anything.

check your sharpness and focus settings on your camera. These only work if shooting in jpeg. they are unaffected in raw. Your camera may have issues and check the alignment of your sensor

All I can say is that I was amazed at the sharpness of mine, I am the kinda gut that will enlarge pictures way past normal viewing as I guess that comes from shooting macro, and I was totally blown away by the sharpness of crops of pics taken with the 10-22.

Under exposure cannot be attributed to the lens, the cameras exposure is influenced by the aperture, light through lens and other camera settings such as ISO, white balance, exposure compensation.
Decide what you want the lens for, landscape, portrait or sport/wildlife. You seem to be interested in wide angle, given what you have been looking at. Both the Canon and the Tamron are good lenses for the money. Check camera settings and try both lenses again. good luck.

I have the sharpness set to the high side. Not sure what you mean by the focus setting.
What camera where you using the 10-22 with?

Thanks. I might give them another try, as you suggest. I had my camera in Av mode, so all of the pictures were taken at the same aperture, but the camera was changing the shutter speed, depending on which lens I was using.

Thanks. How do I check the alignment of my sensor?

There are several focus checking sites google one or two up and check your focus on your lens. I don't use your lens I have a 5d Mk 111 which is a full sized sensor. In your programs built in to your camera you have a focus settin and a sharpness setting they should be just a touch on the plus side 1 or 2 at the most, any more and you will get chromatic abberation and noise. You cannot check your sensor alignment you would need a repairman to check that. But if you eliminate the possiblilty that your lens isnt out of alignment, borrow one that you know is true. Then you will know its your camera.

I own the Canon T3i/600D with a Sigma 8-250mm f/3.5-6.3
I am contemplating to purchase the dpreview highly recommended Sigma 50mm f/1.4 $382 at Amazon.
Or the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 $969
Or the Canon 85mm f/1.8 $369

Amazon users reviews are not good regarding the Canon line of 50mm lenses which I was considering until 30 minutes ago.

I have a T2i and am having great issues with it. I did a lot of research and discovered that the T2i and T3i DO NOT have linear Chromatic Abrasion correction. The CA is showing up in any of my pictures with white in it and the CA in trees is terrible. It does not matter what my lens is set to i.e. 28, 100 or 200mm etc. If you do a search you will see that Canon did not put the correction in the body until they got to T4i. I am selling my T2i to someone that is not into anything but "snap shots" and/or wants to convert to infrared. I do a lot of macro and nature photography. If I am taking fall colours or "close up " it is not bad but for anything that you want "sharp" this camera will not do the trick. I put my lens on my 2 sister's T2i cameras and they do the same thing. I put all my lenses on my husband's 450D and the pictures are MUCH better.
To say the least I am very disappointed in the camera. I wrote Canon and their suggestion was to by their L series lenses and/or prime lenses... I told them if I could affort the L-series lenses I would have them and a much more expensive camera!
I couldn't figure out why my pictures were not sharp. Now I know.
I also tried several ways to correct it in PP but it is so bad it will not be corrected. The only way it helps is to turn the photo B/W and even then you see dark lines around things....sigh.. I would not mind if it was at the extreme ends of the lens as I would compensate for that, but this is seen throughout the entire zoom.
Well I have ranted enough.... did I tell you I am upset over this!!..... sorry.... Tom I wish I had better news for you but I just went through all this with Canon and don't have any good suggestions for you. Please check out the info on line and take your lens to a dealer and try it on either the T4i and or 60D and compare your pictures. Let me know if I am wrong. This is one time I wish I were.... Best of luck and I feel for you! Clicker.

I also have a T3i, and find that the sharpness is not as good as I hoped. Often find that little digitals take better pictures....so I will try adjusting the settings as suggested and hope for better quality....Thanks and good luck
