About a month ago I ordered a Canon EOS R camera. Of course it was purchased on line. The photo store ad was written like it was a new camera But it didn’t specify either new or used. It arrived in what appeared to be a new box and included the accessories I expected. BTW, my old camera was a Canon 60D. Listed below is my concern.

Being anxious to try it out, I pulled an SD card directly out of my old camera And placed it in the EOS R. I took about 100 photos then pulled the SD card to upload the images onto my computer. I was shocked to notice the photo count on the card was Showing over 5,000+ photos had been taken. The first thing I thought was that I ended up with a USED camera.

Here comes the question: The shutter count from the EOS R STARTED AT over 5,000 but this count was very close to the shutter count from my old 60D camera. COULD THE NEW EOS R PICK UP THE SHUTTER COUNT FROM THE 60D? Is this possible?

Thanks for any clarity you can provide.

Could my using an SD card from my old camera overwrite the shutter count of my new camera???

I think you are confusing shutter count with photo count on the card.

Upload the first of your 100 images you took on your new camera to a site that will give you a shutter count. There are many of them for Canon.

Canon EOS cameras will continue to count from another camera, especially if you don't format the card before using in a new / different EOS body. As you'll see on page 367 of your EOS R manual, the default is continuous.

👍 ergo, no real world relation between true shutter count and image count on a card. Check your settings.

If you are just basing your shutter count on the SD card image number than you can not rely on it being accurate count. Understand that the number of the count on your SD card is not the same as the number of actuations of your shutter. They are two different things.

Exactly!

I had the exact same happen to me with my new EOS R despite using a brand new SD card. I immediately took the camera to the local Canon agent for them to do a shutter count. The count correlated to the number of exposures that I had taken. Canon said that very often a new camera will start the number count on the SD card at a random number but were unable to explain why.

My practice is never to swap cards between cameras without reformatting Them first.

Sounds like your new camera picked up the photo count from the other camera. I always reformat the card (or use a new card and then reformat) in a new camera. Otherwise, the photo count will pick up where the old one left off, especially if you are going from one Canon to another (with a similar file system).

It's simply amazing how few read the manual for anything they buy to fully understand the features and options. Cars, electronics, photo gear etc. I just shake my head when i hear the oft said comment- "oh I never knew it could do that..."

Thanks for the info. I was anxious to try the camera. Should have used a fresh SD card.

The downside is that there was NO printed manual with the camera. I did download the PDF manual as per instructions.
