I have used a mirco soft flight simulator while teaching. It seemed to cut down on some of the time required and enable students to practice at a lower cost. Many airlines and the military use a simulator (not Microsoft) in practice. It is safer and cheaper than crashing a plane.

The Navy (at least here) uses Microsoft FS. They have modded it to fit their needs, but it's still the base MS version of the game.

I agree! Not long ago I sold my Cessna 152 and let my certificate expire. As my memory is fading Iv'e a mind not watching the carb heat, stall recovery and a few nasty crosswind landings will still be in my last brain cell to go.
Don't imagine ya get those adrenaline rushes settin in front of a computer.
And it looks like you forgot where the apostrophe goes in "I've".
The way hear it flying a plane is hours and hours of boredom interspersed by moments of shear terror. I probably watch too many episodes of Air Disasters on the Smithsonian channel.

Any opinions om Flight Simulator? I've seen a couple of videos on YouTube, and it looks interesting. Is it necessary to have extra hardware to get the most ut of it?

Some of them are quite a lot of fun to sample and experiment with. You ca also learn to fly helicopters for some of the newer single seaters that are under $40K in the public market for unlicensed flight.........risky-business.......but it's worth a shot Jerry. Have some fun.....No Risk On Line as opposed to the real thing and Consequences.

Unsafe and illegal as hell to do a stall with the back seat occupied, CG rearward and possibly beyond rear CG limit. Your pilot friend was an idiot.

If your going to Elmira/Corning area go to the glider port and take a ride. Nothing like it. It is the glider port of the world. Also, in Lock Haven, Pa, there is a architect that owns a Russian mig. Not sure of model. He keeps it at the Williamsport Lycoming Co. airport. Will take you for a ride. Used to be $300 for 1/2 hour. In Lock Haven you will also find the Piper aircraft museum and in Williamsport is Avco Lycoming museum. They used to make motors for Cords and Duesenburg autos, still motors for Piper and others, and motors for the military drones.
The area from Corning to Williamsport to Lock Haven is a hotbed for aviation. All within 1 hour or less from Williamsport!

However, the hardware needed to have a good sim experience adds up quickly. In research, I found the Honeycomb Alpha Yoke is the best at $250. The Logitech Rudder at $170. and the Logitech Throttle at $60.

Add it all up ... comes to > $500 for such a joy ride!

I believe you also need a pretty high end graphics card and fairly new fast processor. What GPU/CPU are you using with success?

Core i7 from 2016. I forget what graphics card I have.

I have a copy of x plane and have enjoyed. You need a fast graphics processor and memory. I suspect the new MS will be decent, x plane has a lot of development behind it and uses real physics model for flight.

It's something you enjoy or don't, IMO. I am not a fan of flying an airliner from hub to hub, in sim or RL.

There are lots of add on planes, I especially like the twin engine and single engine turboprops.

Well, most people say they are afraid of heights. Have you ever been in a tall building and looked out the window? Have you ever driven a car? Piloting a plane is much easier than driving a car. But, how can that be? On the flight deck of a plane, there are much fewer distractions than on the road. Just pay attention to the instruments. As for safety, the most dangerous part of flying is driving your car to the airport.
So you are afraid you will get sick, try ginger candy.
As for flying, I don’t think I will be a commercial pilot. But it would be fun. Now I will try to convince my wife that I want to fly in a MiG-29 Jet. Perhaps I should wait until she goes to sleep and ask her.

Playing Flight Simulator is fun but okay as things go.
As for those Hoggers who pilot from the comfort of their living room, I’m not knocking it. But you can’t beat the adrenaline rush of flying.

Happy Shooting!

That reminds me of a flight form NY to NH. I flew from from Albany to Boston and then took a small plane for the flight to NH. The "airline" had just one small counter. Their phone was the payphone on the wall. They weighed everybody so they would know where to seat us in the plane. The pilots looked like they were in high school.

Demonstrating a stall is not a good idea with passengers onboard. I believe it is illegal and if the FAA finds out, you will get sanctioned. What can I say, “I’m an adrenaline junkie!!”

Great idea! I could take lessons and become a pilot for about the same cost as buying Flight Simulator. Add a few dollars more, and I could buy a nice plane or two. Time to start looking online!

I used to live a few miles from Grumman and Republic, and I remember driving past them. A friend used to work for one or the other, and he still consults. I also remember Bellevue, not from personal experience, though.

I've decided that I'm through with flying. I've done enough. When airlines started stuffing as many people as could into a plane, charging for luggage, not providing food, etc., I decided I wasn't going to contribute to their bottom line. They got billions in government handouts. Watching on TV and my computer is enough. Besides, I've been watching hundreds of plane crashes on TV, and I don't want someone to be watching me crash.

I probably won’t be able to buy a plane. I have two kids in college and my wife won’t let me buy a Canon 1Dx or a Nikon D6. When I showed her a Hassie she almost killed me with that look of hers.
As for lessons, I go out occasionally but not as often as I could afford. I may get my license in the year 2153 if I’m lucky.

I can appreciate your point of view. But I’m not trying to be a commercial pilot. I just wish to add piloting to my skill set.

Looks like you forgot to place an "I" between the words way and hear. Also, where is the comma after the word it? And yes, you probably do watch to many episodes of Air Disasters. Most jaunts in a 152 are of short duration and they are not equipped with auto pilot which pretty much takes the boredom factor out of equation.

I have Intel Core i7-6700K with 16 GB memory, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 graphics card. I down-loaded and installed the Standard version of MS Flight simulator yesterday, and it still takes like forever (about a minute) from launching the icon to getting to the main screen. This slow launch has been reported by others also. Hope that Microsoft fixes that.

I installed a new 500GB SSD M.2 NVMe to house the massive amount of app data (91 GB for Standard, and guessing 120 GB for the highest version) just so that I don't intermingle that big data with my other data.
