The power company where I live (PG&E) has been responsible for burning up whole towns during wind events. They have not kept their lines clear of vegetation that has grown up around them, and some of their equipment itself is not safe. So now they turn off the power in some rural areas for days at a time when it is dry and windy. They're already bankrupt from the lawsuits over the fires. They've been doing some tree clearing and equipment upgrades, but they admit that it will take years to finish what they should have been doing all along. In the meantime, people like me will have to do without power for days at a time on their whim. It looks like Tuesday and Wednesday this week. It's HOT outside.

You can check on it, but it would appear that the major constraints on PG&E were well intentioned but stupid regulations which led to the lawsuits. Comes down to what an individual needs to do based on where they live to have a viable lifestyle. Likely a good bit easier in Montana than CA. Wishing you the best! I can remember as a boy, a big block of ice in a washtub and an electric fan blowing across it.

Wow .. a lot of heat related stuff ..., I’m watching the evening news now and they are reporting 123 in Palm Springs ...

In addition ...record lows and snow are forecast for tonight up Denver ..Montana etc ...go figure ...

Here In California .. Monday and Tuesday are to be extremely fire hazard days with high heats and the worst ...extremely HIGH winds .. California is already under siege by fires statewide ...

Pray for our courageous firefighters and volunteers .., the are going to need our prayers ....

Ah, the regulatory center of the universe, California, a lot of that trimming was not done because the "environmentalists" didn't want trees cut etc and got the paperwork made so complicated that a lot of the time the power companies just said "forget it". Which is on them, but the regs and difficulty is on the "environmentalists" and in some cases the builders of those communities - the homes/buildings look so much nicer on the sales brochure with lots of trees and plants.

Yes, prayers for them, if it gets bad enough they will call up the Guard to fight fires, they have done it before - esp Combat Engineer units with their heavy equipment. My son was a 6 year active Combat Engineer and learning to operate heavy equipment when he changed over to Civil Affairs his last year and went in a Reserve Unit instead of a Guard unit when he left active duty. The Feds would have to move to call up Reserve units.
But if it got bad enough I can see Reserve and even active duty with the right skills being sent to fight fires or rescue people etc.

OK, now I have done it.
Our AC sounded like it was straining a bit. I remembered I forgot to change the filter on the 1st. So I pulled the old one and put in a new one. Yes it was pretty bad, dust, cat hair etc.
Then the AC made a weird noise and started blowing warm air. The wife checked and the thermostat had gone to Program and 89 degrees. She corrected that and put it to manual. I checked it when she asked and changed it to cool only but it is still blowing room temp air (89). I will now check the breakers etc and call the repair service we use - and I will bet that it will be a while to get him here with the heatwave we are having.

I do have a 9000 btu portable I can put in the living room which is where she stays 90% of the time, it should help. I will have to open the slider and cover it with something to vent it but better than nothing if I have to do that.

Robert,
Try shutting it off and restarting. Maybe it will solve its issue.
Worth a try anyway and good luck all... the heat sounds terrible.
It's been cool in New England this fall early.
No doubt we will pay a rice later though.

I am on the east coast. From what I have read, GreenPeace or whatever, don't want the power companies to clean the brush/bushes/trees from the power lines. "I" would sue the crap out of the outfits the DON'T clear the lines. PSEG has crews come in and clear the lines from trees and branches. Most outages are from storms, not fires.

Winter in Arizona, summer in Montana. There is a reason for that.

Projections are 111-114 degrees today by 4pm ... with the highest being 109 in the month of September recorded many years ago ...

Yes....it's got to be oppressive out there. Good luck to you Doc. Stay hydrated.

I did that once, but I have read it can take a while for the processor to completely reset. I have it turned off right now so the 9000 btu unit is not fighting the hot air being circulated through the house by the central unit fan. It is keeping the living room livable so far. It is already 91 in my back yard at 10:25 AM. In a few hours I will turn it on and see if it starts up. I am in the family room which was added after we got the new central AC/Heating unit and this room has a small AC of it's own. It is still getting up into the 90s back here after 3 PM. At that point I will turn the computer, TV etc off and read on my e-reader with the portable and a fan aimed at my lounge chair. Both dogs will then curl up next to my chair.
I was right about the service call, the people who installed the unit (we bought it through Costco) have me on their service schedule for Sat.
