I didn't realize before that every successful photographer thinks everyone else has a better camera. I have always thought that way and now I should consider myself a successful photographer. Its always nice to be able to upgrade one's self.
Thank you!!

Thanks for asking--I was too embarrassed to ask. I'm guilty of multiple types of GAS.

Good point.

I try to make sure I am more active in the latter than the former.

A lot of people talk about "justifying" the cost of a given camera or lens. JMHO but if you can afford to acquire your dream camera or lens and can do so by lawful, ethical and moral means - and it is something that will bring you joy - I see nothing wrong with making that purchase.

You wish. More likely they will simply take it to Goodwill or sell it at their next yard sale for 1/10 its worth 😁

.

My uncle told his wife to not sell his trains to his friends when he dies. He said they will lowball her like he did when he bought them.

Red6, if you follow UHH's Photo Gallery and some of the specialty sections like Close-Up, instead of hanging out in main discussion forum, you will find many people posting frequently who are enthusiastic hobbyists, using the same camera for years.

Lots of us retired folk have the time and passion to enjoy the part of our hobby that involves taking pictures 😊

I wish I had that kind of time. Still working full time makes it difficult. Maybe some day!! In the meantime “I owe I owe so off to work I go!”.

How fortunate! I recently bought a set of Lionel trains. Of course there is a forum, and everyone on there is a man - middle-aged or older.

Some of their layouts are unbelievable. Trains are loaded with electronics these days. Mine layout will be tiny.

I’ve seen those layouts. Unbelievable!! It takes a lot of time, some money and talent. I would have loved to do that but chose photography instead. Made the right choice. And I can still shoot layouts without building them.

GAS relief has made me more active. I recently sold 2 DSLRs and my lens collection and purchased a mirrorless with a nice lens. I was previously spending more time thinking about which camera to use for the day instead of using a camera. Now with one camera and one lens I feel relieved from my GAS and am enjoying taking pictures. Okay, a little obsessive but it worked.

One camera and one lens? Amazing and unbelievable that you can survive each day!! lol

There are no rules for good photographs, great photographs have just one: the camera used was better than yours.

Then why are your photographs much better than mine? You obviously have the inferior camera.

Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Welcome to the Hog! You must be new.

It is a disease affecting photographers. It is incurable but temporary symptomatic relief is possible by buying some new photographic equipment.

This lockdown and social distancing has made my gas attacks more frequent. But I now have a lot of nice lenses!!

Failure is when you talk yourself out of buying a better camera.

No question about that ! You could add "showing " to "buying" and "using" ....... that's why photography is such an absorbing hobby .

If you don't have a willingness to spend time in learning and practice, there's always the option of buying new equipment.

I’m not sure if this is should be a general statement. People like myself read the manual. It took me 3 days to read the manual for my camera before I unpacked it. Other people (who don’t read the manual) just yank it out of the box and start to finagle with their new toy.
Those who don’t read the manual are more prone to GAS. With my new camera, if I’m not sure of a particular capability, I’ll open up my cell phone and read the manual I downloaded.
While every new gadget or thingamabob may look nice but you still have to schlep it around. I only have two hands. If I get a third hand, maybe I’ll give into a GAS attack.

Happy Shooting!

Some probably meet the definition of hoarder vs. collector.

As I child I grew up hearing "save that, you might need it some day." Coming from parents who went through the Great Depression.

A couple of years ago a local lady was advertising in Craigslist, the sale of her late husband's Nikon Collection. He was a retired engineer and photography hobbyist. She posted a photo of all of his Nikon equipment and it was immense. She said he had bought new, virtually every Nikon lense made since 1970. Of course the very rare 6mm f/2.8 was not in the collection. The woman didn't have any idea what the collection was worth. She just wanted to sell it as a whole and not piece it out. I didn't have the cash, but someone got a good deal for $10,000!!!
Some probably meet the definition of hoarder vs. c... (show quote)

I wonder if she held out the 6mm for herself!! What a great deal for a great collection.
