Not me Linda, Photography is one of several hobbies of mine that my youngest son pursues also. And, he uses the same brands of cameras (probably not accidental). I will say that although we’ve worked in the darkroom together, i’m guessing he’ll give all that equipment away (he’s a LR/PS maven).

As with books, there are buyers and they share the world with readers.

And sometimes they go together. That’s the joy of a hobby. Collecting, shooting, displaying. Nothing wrong with GAS as long as kept within family budget and affordable.

in photography , there are "snap" decisions and then there is "taking your best shot"

Thank you for saying this out loud. And it is not confined to hobbyists. I know professional railroaders who enjoy collecting vintage paper items and artifacts ("ephemera"). I know two-way radio professionals who collect radio equipment. Most focus on a particular manufacturer. I had interests that extended well beyond my official responsibilities at each of the places where I have workedd.
I really like digital cameras and lenses. I like the notion of a functional, self-contained system of wonderful design that performs a useful function for me. And I like finding ways to make it function at or beyond the limits of its intended design. And I like the things that my newer cameras can do that there is not a way in the world that my older ones can do...the images I can capture now that I could never have captured before.
So yes...it is a separate but tightly related interest (and hobby). And it irritates me at least a little when folks choose to take me to task for either (or any) of my hobbies.
Pardon my ignorance, but what means "GAS" in the photographic sense of the word?
I know GAS as:
o Flatulence
o Runs my car
o Heats my house
Etc, etc, etc.
Interesting. Just yesterday, I procured my first digital camera 😬

Gear Acquisition Syndrome
Welcome to the Hog! You must be new.
It is a disease affecting photographers. It is incurable but temporary symptomatic relief is possible by buying some new photographic equipment.

Every successful photographer is driven by an inner voice telling them everyone else has a better camera.
That is the result of something invented a long time ago called: Marketing.
It affects us all and not just in photographic equipment.
Even when we think we are in control we are not. The American Marketing will get us and I love it.

I think it's rather the reverse. In my opinion it is the "
unsuccessful" photographer that thinks everyone else has a better camera with a full frame sensor.
It's a good excuse though.
Also applies to music gear.
