I am very pleased with the D780 but the D750 is a great savings for you!

I upgraded to the Z6 (from the D700) a year ago, and I love it! B&H has the Z6 (body only) for $1796 (which is $200 off their normal price) through Aug 30. The FTZ adaptor is $49.95.

This meets your specifications perfectly.
Uses old Nikon lenses and the AF works that the Z models cannot fully use.

Or with a 24-120 lens is still in budget.

Price is right.

I must agree. Since I've had the D750, I've seen no need for another DSLR. The D780 left its pop-up flash in the parts bin. That's a turn-off for me.

Especially the flash.
Use mine very frequently.

No brainer to me: D750. The best price point camera from Nikon DSLR, used or new for your budget.

Z-5. Nikon has taken a lot of input from Z-6 and Z-7 owners and have put them in the Z-5. If you're not a pro videographer, the Z-5 will more than satisfy your needs...and then some.

"David, What does your current system not do for you that you want it to do?"

That would be the first question I would ask. The D700 continues to be a very good choice when it comes to selecting a camera for portraits and landscapes. Do not let those 12 Mp. make you feel as if they are not enough because a 20x30 inch. enlargement from one of its files will show you what those 12 Mp. are capable of. I bet you do not print that size very often. The camera has the same features of a D3, in my opinion an excellent professional tool.

Now, if the camera lacks features that you need in your photography that is a different story.

I'm a BIF & aviation photographer. Having already used the D750 & D810, I just got myself 2 used DSLRs in excellent shape: D500 ($1000) & D4 ($1300). A world of difference!

If you were thinking of jumping to mirrorless, this might be a good time to do it. You can use your existing lenses via an adapter.

- Z6 is the newer model, selling for $1800, body only. 24MP, FX MILC.

Usually you’re responses are among the most accurate and complete but you flipped this one. The Z6 is two years old and the Z5 is the newer model. The Z5 was just introduced as an entry level FF MILC. It has many of the great features like IBIS and 273 focus points. The big differences are that they are both 24mp, but the Z6 has a BSI sensor that has better low light capabilities than the Z5, the Z6 does great 4K video. While the Z5 can do 4K video it does it at a 1.7 crop. The Z6 can shoot 12fps while the Z5 only does 4.5fps. So, if low light performance, video and frame rate aren’t important then the Z5 will save you money. I think right now you can get the FTZ adapter, (normally $250), for $50 with the purchase of either camera. Another expense with the Z6 will be an XQD or CFExpress card while the Z5 can use your existing SD cards.

If the OP's old F mount lenses will not AF, then any Z camera would be a waste of money.

I picked up a D810 when the early adapters were selling off their like new 810's to buy the new D850. My daughter will get it when I die. I recently picked up a Sony A6xxx for a travel camera and find myself grabbing it more than the D810. Since you don't have a huge investment in glass I'd suggest investigating a mirrorless solution to your upgrade. Borrow or rent one to see if it's your thing before spending your cash.

Whoops!

It's been pointed out to me that I got this backward... The Z5 is the newer model and the Z6 is the 2 yr old model.

The approx. pricing is correct, though. The 2 yr old camera is more expensive. The less expensive, newer Z5 is a more "entry-level" model in some respects, compared to the Z6.

While they are more similar than they are different... the Z6 has a top LCD screen, which the new Z5 lacks. The Z6 also has faster continuous shooting frame rate, a higher resolution rear LCD screen and a few other "enhancements". One place the less expensive Z5 sees an upgrade is dual memory card slots. The Z6 only has a single slot, but it uses faster CFExpress type cards, where the Z5 uses slower SD memory. There are some differences in the two cameras' video capabilities, too. That's not something I know much about. It appears both can record 4K, but that the older and more expensive Z6 can record at higher frame rate (to allow slo-mo, I suppose).

Refer to SuperflyTNT's post above for more differences between the two models.

- D780 is the current update from your camera, but is slightly over your budget at $2300, body only. 24MP, FX DSLR.

- D750 is the earlier version... in between your camera and the D780... still available new and $1500 for body only. 24MP, FX DSLR.

- D610 is a slightly lower specification, more "affordable" model.... body only is selling for $1600.

You might be able to buy "refurbished" direct from Nikon USA website for some savings. (I noticed refurb'd D3X, an older top of the line model, are selling for right at $2000). The newest models, like D780 and Z6, are unlikely to be found refurb'd as yet. Too new. It's usually about a year after introduction before demo units, returns, out of box units start to show up as refurb'd.

Not sure what a "hoppy" is, as it relates to photography... I've had some rather hoppy beer at times

(Yeah, yeah... I know, it's just a typo... but I couldn't resist.)
- D780 is the current update from your camera, but... (show quote)

The Z5 is not two years old - it was released last week - maybe this was a mistake in your post. It was the Z6 that was released 2 years ago - cheers :)
