Some other thoughts on the 2020 camera industry (link): The Best Thing for the Camera Industry Is for Nikon to Exit

The article states it would help the glutted industry if just Nikon exited the camera market. But since Canon is bigger wouldn't just their exit help it more?

If your pictures are not good enough, you're using the wrong brand.

"IT" being the market... corps aren't interested in the overall market. Nothing is that altruistic. The 'IT" would be...who would it help more? In this case...it would help Nikon more. They are less diverse and have had big losses. They make good dough in optics and medical equipment.
Canon is on much firmer ground and can push on through the doldrums.

I just finished reading all 5 pages of replies to the OPs post. My takeaway is that this community sees mirrorless as the future of our type of photography. Nikon is falling or has fallen behind Sony and Canon in mirrorless technology, are concerned Nikon will not catch up and maybe fail as evidenced by rats abandoning the ship. Some are happy to see them fail (fanboys of a different manufacturer), others don't care (not invested in Nikon), some see it as tragic and are not giving up just yet (invested in Nikon), still others are taking a wait and see attitude. I'm invested in Nikon, but am in the wait and see category. In all cases, just go out and make the best images you can with what you've got.

You consistently push this fallacy that Nikon is falling behind in mirrorless. Yes both Nikon and Canon got a late start in mirrorless but both have made great advances. There are things There are things each brand does better. Pretty much all the issues with Nikon’s initial release have been fixed with firmware updates. Each company has recently released a new camera. Both Canon and Sony have gone more video centric, with Canon’s big feature being 8K video. It’s a camera with impressive specs but has also already had some serious issues. And really for most of us 8K is overkill. Unless you’re shooting professional video why would you shoot 8K. The files are huge and I wouldn’t want to process them without a professional video workstation. Really 4K is overkill for most people. Sony’s new entry is a real head scratcher, it’s basically a video camera. In 2020 and going forward nobody is gonna buy a 12mp camera for stills. Nikon took a different approach and went with an entry level FF camera that is geared to still photography. It’ll still do better video than most DSLR’s but it’s designed to get people that don’t want to drop $2000 plus on a new camera into mirrorless. Nikon developed the best and most flexible mount system that really opens up the door for advances in lens design and there’s even conjecture that it could support a medium format body someday.

Nikon's mirrorless adapter doesn't even support all their own AF lenses, some they even sell new today. Could that be part of the problem? Maybe?

Not for me...and I'm sure a large percentage of folks who don't own/use the old stuff. Mine works great with everything I have (but I'm upgrading as we speak to Z glass...so far, amazing). <shrug> Hard statistics would support all arguments...we just don't have alot of that around here. ;0)

Yup. I think that's why MG is dumping the lenses. Pros simply don't desire to have to use adapters.
One of the historical strengths of Nikon was the ability to keep their lens lines alive with newer bodies.
That's pretty much been shredded, and pros have coin and ...better options.

The Nikon cameras are superior equipment, just like all camera brands today. The new mirrorless glass really makes the difference, something that doesn't seem to sink-in here at the UHH retirement home. I mention the adapter just to remind those fanboys of 40-years yammering about the F-mount continuity that actually it was Nikon that finally failed (some of) their customers too when moving onto the future of digital photography.

But that’s true of Canon and Sony too. You need adapters for their DSLR glass too.

I love when people selling their gear.....I bought some high end equipment for less than 1/4 of the original price......
What does it matter what Kind of equipment he uses......

True, but Canon has changed their mount systems more than Nikon.
Sony...well Sony made the move first and the benefits of making the right move has paid off. Remember the old cliche... Sony has no glass. Sony now has the MOST native mirrorless glass.
I'm only talking in the context of professionals....like MG.
Adapters are a put off for them.
Pros certainly are not using the old A-Mount system with Sony. That makes zero sense...they have all they need in native E-mount glass.

The hobbyists...will be hobbyists. But all of the camera corps want the pro's ... because statistically...the pros are social influencers. Just the way it is.
Nikon...well...Nikon has fallen on a series of bad decisions and delays. they also developed an entire line..and abruptly cancelled it. That must have cost a pretty penny.

...it's how we use words that kinda gets me, "failure" in the face of a radically new mount, for example (and I register the "yammering" too, lol). IDK, I've never been in that fight (Canon/Nikon) but bought in to Nikon early (for me), prolly because I liked the sound of the name! Now I'm investigating Sony a bit and might be toting an A9 sometime soon, heh...all I know is, right now my little Z6 is cool beans and I can get fine results in *any* situation (so far) and I'm excited with the glass, so am investing (and looking for a Z7!). <shrug>

I am a long time Canon user. I bought a Nikon D610 for a friend in the UK because it was on sale at B&H. Then he changed his mind because we hadn't thought through customs duty etc. So, I was going to send it back unopened. I opened it and fell in love. I don't prefer it to my Canon 5D IV or vice versa. Just different.

Mirrorless have their place but an OVF is irreplaceable.
