I am running the subscription version on a 2013 MacBook Pro.

I have problems using full screen on an external monitor for reviewing or retouching. This is a somewhat recent problem, it happened within the last year.

When reviewing the program is very slow to respond and freezes for multiple seconds sometimes 10s of seconds. I don’t usually have to restart but it is virtually unusable for quickly reviewing images.

My work around is to avoid full screen mode. It seems to work ok as long as I don’t use full screen mode for reviewing. 😡

If you are using full screen you might try exiting full screen and see if it makes a difference.

Just spitballing, but you could try setting the video card in lightroom preferences to either auto (lightroom decides) or off. I've read of some issues with some video cards, to be non-specific.

Just like Windows systems Macs use virtual memory which is just a chunk of hard drive space reserved for the system to treat as if it was real memory. If your hard drive is too full or it has not been cleaned up in a while, then the system will have difficulty using the virtual memory. The process of swapping files from active memory to virtual memory can be slowed by this situation and cause the system to pause or in some cases to actually lockup. A disk cleanup, replace drive with a larger SSD or increasing system memory can help with this situation.

A few people have announced that running Lightroom as administrator fixes the issues.

Right-click on your LR symbol, select Run As Administrator. See what occurs

Wow! I tried that and it does seem to make a difference. Can you explain why this seems to work?

What Lightroom symbol are you referring to? I checked in Library and Develop and only see one LR symbol in the upper left corner. When I right or left click on it I do not get an option for running as administrator. Could you pls clarify or explain what else I need to do. I am using a Mac so that may be part of the problem???

It is your Windows account, they come in "User" and "Administrator", you reach them through "Settings" or hitting the indicated key during startup.

Unless you really trust your security apps they recommend you use a "User" account for most stuff and only sign in as an "Administer" when you need to. Why, because if a hacker gets to your machine while you have everything open etc it makes it harder for them to change/screw up some stuff since an "Administer" can do things a user cannot.

Thank you for the suggestion. The computer has a solid state hard drive, ~45% free space.

My sense is it has something to do with video because it only happens whith the external monitor in full screen mode. And only LR classic.

I have had issues with the video setting in the past, but it affected all the operations not only external monitor however it’s worth a trying again. Thank you for the suggestion.

Same problem. I noticed it did not happen on my Dell XPS 13. So I upgraded my desktop to one with 64 gb of RAMM and a 5 TB drive SSD and a 5 GB internal backup. Still working off. external hard drive. Lightning fast. Problem Solved.
