Personal opinion of a nonprofessional, I like the original of the tree. As someone else noted the cloning out is rather obvious. The light house photo looks good in the original with the clouds. I would, maybe, increase the contrast of the sky a bit, but the clouds and birds make it seem more real, to me.

I'm somewhat of a purist. So, if it's not there, it's not in my photographs. That said, I look at these with an unprejudiced eye. The tree branches certainly left a mess in the sky that replaced them. A bit more practice and bettering your technique will result in improvement.

The lighthouse looks rather nice.

I admit to replacing the sky only once. It was for a client who had a land investment business. He wanted to 'improve' the look of the real estate photo he wanted on the cover of his brochure. That was back in 1969 / 70. Although I was complicit, I didn't push the narrative the cover photo told. That was the one and only time.

The bottom tree scene looks better, and the top LH scene looks better to me. Although I would fade the clouds out more as they approach the horizon for a more realistic atmospheric perspective.

Wow, fading the clouds. That is a great idea. Thanks. The shots are all beautiful.

I agree with you inclination to making the tree "less busy", how much and how well are a matter of opinion. Without the before picture, much of the differences might not be noticed. A give away though is the shadow of the busy tree on the rocks but that's a bit of nitpicking.

BTW, playing with the images is all part of the fun. Used to be in the old days (film) that the image out of the camera was sacrosanct (ala Galen Rowell) but now with digital, it's just the first step in the creative process.

Play on!

on the tree branches, i think that it is an improvement but I think that you should have taken out the one that is touching the rock also. Otherwise i think that it is a nice composition.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I may try a redo on this working from the original but since I don't intend to print or publish this photo I'll just view it as a learning experience,

The shadow on the rock does not fit the "improved" tree.

I like the trimmed tree - the extra branches are distracting. I'm of two opinions on the lighthouse: while I like the simplicity of the cloudless pic, the roof gets kind of lost against the blue sky. The clouds alleviate that, but are a little too busy for my taste.
Thems my opinions, and I'm sticking to them until they change!

We did a west coast trip three years ago... LA - San Juan Islands. I remember that lighthouse. Isn't it privately owed? Then we did a month in the UP, chasing lighthouses... great fun! I think the site we used for maping was FriendsofLighthouses.com or something similar. Thanks for sharing!
