I'm thinking somewhere in the middle.

I like viewers of my work to look at everything. Even the cat sitting behind Lucky trying to see what the heck is going on.

Looking back I wish I had shot on manual with a lower ISO so that I wouldn't have the left side of her nose "washed out." I panicked and took a shot quickly on "auto" not knowing if the farm lady would come out and call the dog off or not. Thankfully, she did.

I don't mean to be harsh, but you asked for it. I don't like either one. Hard to tell exactly what you want to shoot. The dog or the background. Is there any way to photograph thye pooch in a better location With more emphasis on the dog and a more distant background? Just my .02 cents

IDguy's thoughts are the same as mine as to this image - ditto. I'm still not quite awake so I'm going with that and less typing to boot!!

I agree. I thought that creating a vignette around Lucky would make her stand out as the subject that tells the story best. But I may have got carried away and overdid a good thing and made it too obvious.

Rearranging the dog and the background wasn't an option. I had to shoot from the hip, hoping the farm lady would come out and rescue me before the farm dog ate me up. But I appreciate your idea. I like it when you tell it like it is. Shooter41.

I think somewhere between the first and second might be best.

After taking a shot of a farm dog more than willing to protect her family's homestead when a stranger approached, I worked on it in Photoshop and can't decide which version is best. Would several of you take a look at the two versions and help me decide which is best? Thank you for your expertise and suggestions.
Shooter41 I darkened her nose where it was washed out and lightened the cat in the background. Better?

I like the second one. It is a bit edgy, and the extra contrast provides good separation between the dog and the background. There is no question the dog is in his element and one should reconsider whether they want to approach. Good story, even without the caption. It's a shame the left side of the snout is so bright. The upside down planter is distracting, as is the post over the dog's head.

Did you even bother to consider how the cat in the background might feel about things?

I prefer 2 because it isolates your subject from a somewhat busy background. You might add a tad more light but preserve the isolation.

I like the softness of the 4th picture.

While you are processing you might consider removing the bright spot in the background along with the pole coming out of the dogs head.
