The 50 1.8 is small & light, but so is the AF S Nikkor 24-85 3.5 4.5G which will give you a reasonable portion of the 24-120 zoom flexibility. Had it for an outing yesterday, had forgotten how much I liked it.

The 24-85 you mention is my most used lens and is extremely sharp. I found it well worth the very inexpensive price compared to other lenses.

In fact, the weight of a lens has no effect on the camera's weight. For example, a camera that weight 1100g with no lens attached, will weigh 1100g with any kind of lens attached. It's simple quantum physics.

You must be a big newkyular physicist or sumpting. That is a huuuugely astounding revelation. This stuff is why we all depend on our Online Experts.

I think you must be correct. Lightz is a physicist and inhabits a parallel universe.

Can someone recommend some light weight lens for the D610...I have the 24-120 f4 which is extremely heavy for me....thankyou

This question requires more info to answer specifically to your use case - some of the suggestions that have been given already seem very good, although if you feel the 24-120 is too heavy then any relatively comparable zoom will be similar.

Without knowing what you are using the lens for, which is the most important piece of info missing, a simple 50mm is the most basic lens, and is said to best approximate the human field of view making it neither wide angle nor telephoto, but the standard by which other lenses are considered such. With respect to 50mm lenses there are many. Some here have suggested the Nikon 50mm 1.8G, which is indeed a great lens for the price and quite small and light.

As an alternative to that, I would also suggest the Tamron SP 45mm 1.8 VC - 45mm is actually a better approximate of the human field of view than is 50mm and the Tamron is very sharp. Additionally it has VC (Tamron's version of image stabilization) which is good for about 3 stops of stabilization making this lens much better than the Nikon 50 1.8G on your unstabalized D610 in low light situations.

The Tamron is a little bit bigger and heavier than the Nikon 50mm (but less so than the 24-120) and costs more than the Nikon 50mm- I think you can get it for $399 - when it came out it was $599 and it was worth that amount - it is a very good deal at $399 and you can probably get it used much cheaper.

The Tamron is much more lens than the Nikon 50mm 1.8 but as it is bigger and more expensive (twice the price - I believe the Nikon is just a little over $200 new) it is a trade off - you will do well with either. If size and weight are the only consideration then go with the Nikon 50mm 1.8

Hope this gives you something to think about :)

Nikon 18-300 is a nice lens.... take a look at Ken Rockwellโ€™s site and review his reports on lenses..www.kenrockwell.com. Also, identify what you typically want to shoot...if youโ€™re looking for used lenses no longer manufactured...KEH.com & mob.com offer great deals, as do B&H.com & Adorama.com

50mm or 35mm f1.8 lens.
It's old fashioned but a simple prime can be a great and useful tool. And both are much lighter then a zoom.

I have both of these lenses - haven't used the 50mm more than a few dozen times and it will eventually be part of a trade-in. The 35mm, on the other hand, is sharp and very useful, even for night sky shots. BTW - it is a Tamron SP.

You will probably find what you need with the Nikon AF-D type lenses. These lenses do not have VR and you set the aperture with a ring on the lens instead of a dial on the camera, also they use the motor in the camera for auto focus instead of a motor built into the lens. For those reasons the AF-D type lenses are smaller, lighter and less expensive than the AF-S G type lenses. While Nikon does still make some AF-D type lenses, many are now out of production, but you can find them online. I have purchased out of production lenses on line from KEH.com and the B&H used department. These are reputable companies and their condition ratings are spot on. There are other reputable companies that I have seen mentioned but since I havenโ€™t used them I donโ€™t want to suggest them. Hopefully members who have experience with those other companies will bring them up. I have also bought lenses on e-bay with out problems, but be aware of the seller ratings.

I also have a number of AF-D lenses. Very sharp, and inexpensive. Use them on my D90 and D50. All EBay purchases. Very satisfied.
