Camera question: I have a Nikon D7000 16MP DX camera. I have a chance to upgrade to a clean used Nikon D7200 24MP DX camera a few years newer. It’s the upgrade I can afford. Plus my collection of 5 Nikon lenses are all DX Lenses.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade or more a lateral move. Besides a larger pixel count and possibly lower noise it has WIFI and Near Field Communications.

Thanks, Dave

If you have a good deal, and only have one camera body, run for the D7200.
I kept my D300 when I bought the newer model, and still like to use the D300 around the house for personal pictures, small prints, but I would feel totally lost with only one body and multiple lenses.

Dave I agree with Strodav... The D7200 is vastly superior to the D7000 especially if you are shooting commercially... The center press to 100% view is a huge difference... you'll be able to verify critical focus in an instant...

I have shot the D7000 commercially and it is stellar...
But the D7200 is head and shoulders over it... love how it's EXPEED 4
The fact that it offers Auto ISO in manual mode places it solidly in the Prosumer camp...

Albeit most here on UHH will never use a fraction of the feature rich capabilities it offers...
Therefore unless you are an advanced hobbyist or commercial shooter you will probably not see a major difference between your current D7000 other than a larger file size... a.k.a. resolution.

Dave if you have any thoughts of accepting commercial assignment it might be wise to avoid the D7500 as Nikon crippled it with a single card slot and no batter grip... lack of a battery grip is unthinkable for those shooting long glass for sports, even the D7200 with battery grip is a tad light for my AF 300mm 2.8 and it is heavier with a metal alloy body... the D7500 is all plastic.

Below is a comparison...
See what the difference is for yourself...
And think carefully about who your clients are...

Hope this helps Dave... Please stay safe, practice social distancing and wear a mask in public.
These countermeasures are effective and are the best we have until a vaccine is available...

Hi Thomas,
I love your well composed and beautifully executed portraits and hope I can learn something from you by asking a couple of questions regarding these photos you included. In pic #1, was the lighting solely from the sun or did you add fill flash also? Pic #3 looks like an outdoor setting and you "killed" the ambient light to create the dark background. How did you light the model's face? A beauty dish or reflective umbrella? How did you light the rim around the model's shoulder and arms? Thanks so much sharing your expertise.

If you want to stick with a DX camera, I really would recommend the D7500.

I would upgrade to the D7200 and keep the D7000 as a nice backup. Not worth selling or trading IMO. Worth more to you as a second shooter with all Nikon glass.

Personally went from the 7000 to the 7200 and have never regretted it. Find the 7200 photos are sharper, although not by much. If the price is right, can't go wrong.. Good luck.

I would get a refurbished D7500 for the same money and enjoy the new processor and autofocus upgrades if I was going to spend that much.

I agree with Dave. I made the jump from the 7000 to the 7500 and was very pleased

Move up to the newer camera body there are a lot of improvements. And updates. Once you get it make sure that the firmware has been updated. If you can afford to keep your older body.

As a wedding photographer who shot a lot of flash photos I purchased the D7000 when it first came out to replace my D300. I found it to be totally unacceptable for wedding work because skin tone shot with flash always looked pasty and unnatural. Also very high noise level at moderate to high ISO. I thought it was inferior to my D300 which I still have. When the D7200 came out I traded in the 7000 and got the 7200. Much better on all counts. I would not want a D7000 if someone gave it to me for free.

Think about the Z50....it's great! I had upgraded to the D7500 and find the Z50 superior.

I doubt most could tell the difference with pics taken in your main venues. We have had a 3100,7000,7100, 500,7500, 810 and an 850 and unless you just feel the need to move up, a good deal on a 7200 would be nice.

The wifi business will be argumentative.

I have a D5000, D7000, D7200, and now D500, and l think the upgrades are worth it.
