Nikon D7000 upgrade to D7200, worth it?

I use my camera for all types of photography but mainly Astrophotography, Automobiles, and Portraits.

Camera question: I have a Nikon D7000 16MP DX camera. I have a chance to upgrade to a clean used Nikon D7200 24MP DX camera a few years newer. It’s the upgrade I can afford. Plus my collection of 5 Nikon lenses are all DX Lenses.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade or more a lateral move. Besides a larger pixel count and possibly lower noise it has WIFI and Near Field Communications.

Thanks, Dave

I doubt most could tell the difference with pics taken in your main venues. We have had a 3100,7000,7100, 500,7500, 810 and an 850 and unless you just feel the need to move up, a good deal on a 7200 would be nice.

The wifi business will be argumentative.

Yes, do upgrade. I did it and have never looked back, the D 7200 is a super camera.

About the only difference between the two is that the 7200 is slightly faster and has a little bigger buffer.

Take a look at this comparison from DPReview https://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=nikon_d7000&products=nikon_d7200

The jump to 24MP will help a lot in what you can capture at a distance and crop into, but I don't see from your listed interests where this is a need of yours?

Looking online, I'm seeing used prices between $600 and $700 from companies that have return options. So, can you get it less than $600 making in a real bargain in a private sale?

I would get a refurbished D7500 for the same money and enjoy the new processor and autofocus upgrades if I was going to spend that much.

Never had a D7000, but picked a used D7200 over a new D7500 (the upgrades were inconsequential for my purposes) have been delighted with the D7200 across the board. I have FX cameras as well, but for many situations, I reach for the D7200.

Have owned a D7200 since it came out in March of 2015. It is an excellent camera and a fairly significant upgrade to the D7000 as shown in the DxOMark sensor comparison. The picture quality is superb. Even though I have a couple of newer camera bodies, I keep my D7200 in my to go bag and take it with me for casual family events. It has never disappointed me.

I am not normally a pixel counter, but the resolution increase is enough to make a difference with your astrophotography work. Looks like you will gain three stops of native ISO (from 1,000 to 8,000, which will also be very helpful) and about 3/4 stop of dynamic range with the D7200. The D7500 adds almost nothing beyond that.

Dave I agree with Strodav... The D7200 is vastly superior to the D7000 especially if you are shooting commercially... The center press to 100% view is a huge difference... you'll be able to verify critical focus in an instant...

I have shot the D7000 commercially and it is stellar...
But the D7200 is head and shoulders over it... love how it's EXPEED 4
The fact that it offers Auto ISO in manual mode places it solidly in the Prosumer camp...

Albeit most here on UHH will never use a fraction of the feature rich capabilities it offers...
Therefore unless you are an advanced hobbyist or commercial shooter you will probably not see a major difference between your current D7000 other than a larger file size... a.k.a. resolution.

Dave if you have any thoughts of accepting commercial assignment it might be wise to avoid the D7500 as Nikon crippled it with a single card slot and no batter grip... lack of a battery grip is unthinkable for those shooting long glass for sports, even the D7200 with battery grip is a tad light for my AF 300mm 2.8 and it is heavier with a metal alloy body... the D7500 is all plastic.

Below is a comparison...
See what the difference is for yourself...
And think carefully about who your clients are...

Hope this helps Dave... Please stay safe, practice social distancing and wear a mask in public.
These countermeasures are effective and are the best we have until a vaccine is available...

Actually, the resolution increase is inconsequential. I have a D7000, however, and the mode (?) wheel is starting to turn too easily. The OP may be experiencing some of the same type of problems. This would be the reason to upgrade, not for a flimsy 8 mp. My daughter has the D7500 and it is a fantastic camera. If at all possible, I'd go for the 7500 over the 7200. Its low light capabilities are excellent as well.

Have to respectfully disagree with you on this, given the OP's stated usage of his camera. 50% more pixels (about 15% higher resolution in each direction, is of great impact with night sky photography. The difference will be immediately obvious, bringing stars that were otherwise not capturable at all into clear view. Even if that were not true, the extra three tops of sensitivity would still be a game changer for him. I agree that the difference would be less significant with other genres of photography, but not in this case.

I own a D7200 and a D850. The D7200 was an upgrade from a D7000 and I found it to be a significant improvement. I use it regularly even though I have the D850.

Yes, the D7200 has a clearly visible improvement in quality over the D7000. I use my D7200 interchangeably with a D500 and can't tell the difference, except for fast moving subjects.
