Camera question: I have a Nikon D7000 16MP DX camera. I have a chance to upgrade to a clean used Nikon D7200 24MP DX camera a few years newer. It’s the upgrade I can afford. Plus my collection of 5 Nikon lenses are all DX Lenses.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade or more a lateral move. Besides a larger pixel count and possibly lower noise it has WIFI and Near Field Communications.

Thanks, Dave

I have the 7000 and used it for years, it now is mostly sitting on the shelf. Two things to keep in mind, 1) wifi is not what most people will use, I use it sometimes when tying it into my phone and sending shots to friends and family, I never use it for full res and/or business, 2) I rented the 7200 and I believe it is the best c-sensor camera with the exclusion of the d500 (a pro model and more expensive). Just an aside, I went to the d610 full frame as my camera of choice but I had started switching my dx lens's to full frame early in my d7000 use. I own the d500 and the d810 and use them most of the time. I keep the d610 hooked up with an old film lens 80 x 200, exquisite glass. Just go with you gut...

I had a 7100 for awhile. The photos looked fine but the tiny buffer drove me crazy. I would go with the 7200 for the buffer alone. I actually went with the 7500 which is the best 'feeling' camera I have held in a long time and has a newer processor than the 7200 but which some on UHH don't like because they want two card slots. Yes, make the change.

I upgraded my D7000 to a D7200 and it was well worth it. I shoot a lot of stuff in low light like wildlife, live music and astrophotography, often with higher ISO, and the noise is considerably lower on the D7200. It is also sharper.

Yes -- Do it! I have the 7200 and the 7500 and use them all the time. I love the 7500. I had the 7100 converted to infrared, and the 7000 collects dust. I did not like the 7000 due to the anti-aliasing filter. I get much sharper photos with the other 7XXX cameras.

I have a D7000 with over 140,000 shutter actuations... still kickin'. It's an iron horse.

Ken Rockwell has a review to get another perspective. https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d7200.htm.

If price is not holding you back, sounds like you can't lose!

I went from a D5000 to a D7000 and made the move to a D7200. The features and improved quality I feel were worth the upgrade and no regrets. I've stopped at the D7200 since it more than meets my needs and is a solid, rugged camera.

I always read all posts before replying; sorry to hear you missed the deal. If you find another opportunity I think there's little doubt it's a good upgrade. For you perhaps res for astro is the sweet spot. I also acquired a D7200 right when the D7500 was released. After much discernment I saved $ and went with the 7200. My only wish is a bigger buffer, especially for BIFs. And floating ISO in manual rocks!

I have just made comparison resolution tests between those same 2 cameras. Both were Nikon-rebuilt from B&H. In my case, at least, there was a considerable improvement with the 7200. Part of this may have arisen from the 7000 having lost focus calibration capability - a fault sometimes noted by others. In any case, I've never had a better camera. Note it still retains the 2nd card slot which the 7500 does not. The only sl drawback is that remote trigger has to be set in the menu, not on the shutter dial as on the 7000.

Definately! I made the switch a few years ago and have never regretted it. I take a lot of birdin flight pictures and the faster speed is very helpful. It’s my go to camera.

Look at a D7500 body only. I think you can find one (body only new) close to the D7200.

I upgraded my D7000 to a D7200 and it was a great move. I used it for 3 years but couldn't resist when I saw a refurbished D7500 on B&H for $599. I bought it and it is now my main camera. Faster focus than the 7200 and the swivel screen is great for low angle shots. I would recommend this over the 7200 but if one is not available and you can get the 7200 for a lower price, go for it. See my posts on Scotland and Ireland for examples of photos taken with the D7500 - mostly through the tour bus windows.

I had a D7K. The D7200 is a much better camera. Buffer size, sensor, the software/firmare you name it. Do it. You will not regret it.
