Thank you all for the thoughtful responses. Unfortunately no sooner had I posed the question then the bargain of a camera had been sold. It was a good deal. A private sale $500 with a battery grip, (2) batteries, 32000 shutter count and a 70-300 5.6 lens. I should have just jumped on it but I didn’t. Now I know better when the next deal comes down the pike. For now I’ll make the best of my 7000 or sell off some excess studio strobes and buy a camera from a dealer with a return policy if there are issues. Thank you all!

I use my camera for all types of photography but mainly Astrophotography, Automobiles, and Portraits.

Camera question: I have a Nikon D7000 16MP DX camera. I have a chance to upgrade to a clean used Nikon D7200 24MP DX camera a few years newer. It’s the upgrade I can afford. Plus my collection of 5 Nikon lenses are all DX Lenses.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade or more a lateral move. Besides a larger pixel count and possibly lower noise it has WIFI and Near Field Communications.

Thanks, Dave

I upgraded 2 years ago from the 7000 to the 7200 and am thrilled I did this. You won't be disappointed.

7200 has a faster buffer for continuous shooting, better resolution, improved sensor for less grain. The 7500 is a great camera as well with improved auto focus with the 180K RGB meter, improved dynamic range, group AF. AF-C is quicker and stays with the subject better. It has one card slot and a tilt screen. Hope this helps.

Dave, realistically there is not a steep curve between the two camera's.
I would say if you took images with both camera's and enlarged them to an 11X14 you would not know which camera took which image.
The biggest difference for me is the fact that the D7000 has the expeed processor 2 and the D7200 has the expeed processor 4. Expeed processor is what manufactures the image, and it is a big deal, Nikon is the sole manufacture for that processor and Sony would love to have it, and Nikon would love to produce Sony's sensor's.
OK, like I said, I doubt you would be able to tell which camera took the 11X14, but their are differences and I will include a detailed comparison between the two
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I can’t tell if this is a good update but look it like you buying a car so older it is so more repair you may have. And when cameras start to fail then it’s really a hazel even if you get it repaired. I would check the shutter count and read reviews about those body’s.....
The tokina 100 mm 2.8 works on my 810 without any problem but on my 7000 I can’t get a sharp pics. I would use certain lenses on my 7000 but nothing else......

Actually, the resolution increase is inconsequential. I have a D7000, however, and the mode (?) wheel is starting to turn too easily. The OP may be experiencing some of the same type of problems. This would be the reason to upgrade, not for a flimsy 8 mp. My daughter has the D7500 and it is a fantastic camera. If at all possible, I'd go for the 7500 over the 7200. Its low light capabilities are excellent as well.

Don’t you love it when somebody with no experience with a camera tells you whether it’s worth upgrading. As someone who actually upgraded from a D7000 to a D7200 I can say that there are several good reasons to upgrade. 50% more resolution for astrophotography is a good one.

I did that upgrade. The D7200 has a few convenience features that are handy like using a dial to set Auto ISO instead of going through the menu. And now I can put a different lens on my D7000 if I ever need to do that, just for flexibility. Both are great cameras.

Go for the D7500 unless you have a dire need for dual card slots

To me this is of easy solution. Is your D7000 satisfying your needs or do you feel it lacks certain features you need in your photography. If it does not satisfy your needs or if there is something lacking that you need you should upgrade.
The D7200, I never owned one but I am familiar with it, is a very good camera but if you are not in need of its features it will not make a big impact in your photography. The 16.9 pixels of the D7000 are a lot of pixels for a majority of applications and the camera, when used with a good lens and good techniques offer excellent files.

I upgraded in 2016 from the D7000 to the D7200 and found it worthwhile. To me, there was a big difference.

I made an upgrade from 16mp to 24mp roughly 1-1/2 years ago. The increased cropping opportunities alone were worth it - were not ‘flimsy’.

Dave, I upgraded from a D3400 to a D7200 so the difference was greater. I looked at a D7000, but the D7200 has some features I liked. I thought I would not worry about the second sd card slot, but it has come in handy. I did it because it felt better in my hand and I liked it, IMHO. Good luck in your decision processing.
