Gators 'gape' for two reasons.
One is NOT to catch flies.
They gape for teeth cleaning by some species of plover and possibly other birds.
And they gape to lower the temperature of the head and brain area.
A mouthful of flies would weigh less than one ounce.
That would not go far in a 500 pound gator, an old wife's tale.

I'd vote for a plastic boat buoy. I think it's too big to be a plastic bleach bottle. Look at the size of those jaws!
