I know exactly how you feel! I received my very first camera as a Christmas gift at age 67 and was too scared to even take it out of the box till the following February or March. The first few pages of the manual, you tube, get answers to your questions here and practice, practice, practice! You can do it!!

i'm a 77 yr old female, but..I still have all my marbles. I have an online jewelry business. In April 2019 I purchased a White Canon SL1 , to take pictures of my jewelry. I came on here, and received a lot of help of how to operate it to get the best pictures. I copy and pasted all the information. I was very appreciative as to all the help I received....but...to this day...I have not used the camera. I'm scared to death (sorry Lord..I mean 'life') of it. I know this sounds ridiculous, and it is, but...I am a simple 1,2,3 girl, and when I get to much information...I short circuit...and freeze up. Is there anyone out there...or is it possible...that I could learn to use this camera in...1,2,3 or 4 steps???? If it's not possible, I'm going to have to sell it. I don't want to because I think it's the cutest camera I have ever seen...and yes it came with the 18-55 lens (I think that's the size).

I believe the auto setting is a green "a" on the dial on top of the camera. Also a switch on the left side of the lens should be set to "auto" focus. Also turn image stabilizer switch to "on". Now you can use it as a point and shoot camera. Just press shutter halfway to focus, then press shutter button all the way down to take a photo.

Thank you. I'll try that.

The nice part about digital cameras is that it costs nothing to practice and you get to see the results right away. There is nothing to fear. You will be pleased with how quickly you learn.

You want it simple?
Set the camera to "P" on the dial.
Then start just taking photos of everything you see around you in the house, outside whatever.
Do this all day long but you will not hurt anything with the camera.
Get close to your jewelry and see how close you can get at different zoom settings on the lens from 18-55.
The point is play with it.
You cannot hurt it unless you put it under water,

Next put your jewelry in a well lit location on a table with a cloth underneath preferably a nice neutral color like a light blue or gray that will enhance the look of your jewelry and take a bunch of photos on "P" and see what happens.
In other words experiment, you will NOT hurt anything and you will become familiar quickly with the camera.
Nothing better than just picking it up. put on "P" and shoot.
You can also try the green square with the A in it as well.
Again you will hurt NOTHING and just have fun.
Who cares if some are not perfect, the "Film" is free.
Please do this and let me know and if more discussion is needed I will help further.

I completely understand, I have a Nikon D3300, as a beginner of 3 years and 69.5 years old, I certainly enjoy Photography and presently feel comfortable with my Camera & lens, although my issue is understanding the technology of Post Processing my images, presently I only shoot in JPEG, due to I do not understand how to Post Process RAW images, What? Program will work on my Chromebook laptop and what settings in the editing program???

See you are in Michigan. I am in the thumb area and we have a club that mentors. If you in that area I will get some one to help you.

Oh my, you have a long long way to go. If photos of your jewelry is all you want, then for starters your camera and lens combo might not render your subjects large enough to give you what you’re looking for. I’d suggest that you find a local camera club and ask someone to mentor you in how to do what you’re trying to do. Most clubs welcome visitors and someone might be willing to help you. Good luck.

That would be an excellent option for her. Most of the newer ones can get in quite close.

A camera like the one you bought could be intimidating. These dSLR cameras for their best performance require some knowledge on basic photography. When I started, so many years ago, there was no one who could help and I mean not like now. It was the b&w film era just to make it a little bit more complicated.

If you do what one of the gentlemen of this forum has suggested, that is to set the camera to P the camera will work in AUTO making ALL the decisions. Some of those decisions will not be to your liking but a large majority most probably will.
Basic photography is not difficult. Exposure meters and metering will take some time and some thoughts but nothing someone could not learn and the rest is easy.

Do not sell the camera. I am 84, active and I do not enjoy photography more simply because of the quarantine.
Good luck and keep safe.

Canon SL1 was my first DSLR. The way you learn anything is to do it. It doesn’t cost anything to get bad shot after bad shot. You’ll get better by trying, don’t be afraid. Go to YouTube, find some videos and shoot, shoot, shoot!
