I NEED (simple) HELP!
i'm a 77 yr old female, but..I still have all my marbles. I have an online jewelry business. In April 2019 I purchased a White Canon SL1 , to take pictures of my jewelry. I came on here, and received a lot of help of how to operate it to get the best pictures. I copy and pasted all the information. I was very appreciative as to all the help I received....but...to this day...I have not used the camera. I'm scared to death (sorry Lord..I mean 'life') of it. I know this sounds ridiculous, and it is, but...I am a simple 1,2,3 girl, and when I get to much information...I short circuit...and freeze up. Is there anyone out there...or is it possible...that I could learn to use this camera in...1,2,3 or 4 steps???? If it's not possible, I'm going to have to sell it. I don't want to because I think it's the cutest camera I have ever seen...and yes it came with the 18-55 lens (I think that's the size).

Find a 12-year-old who feels comfortable with technology, and ask him or her to help you. Kids are amazing. If that doesn't help, find a college freshman who would appreciate being paid for his/her knowledge.
Look I don't know anything about your Camera -- I'm also double seven age group person & trust me when I say failure is like having a pretty good friend -----
Try this -- turn the wheel (one on the top of the camera) to "P" turn the camera on then: Point & Shoot at something !!!
Promise ---- After doing that & checking out the photo "things" will start to get better
Quoting Yoda in Star Wars "Do or don't do, there is no try!" Have no fear! Be sure the battery is charged, pick a place with good light, set the camera on Auto, put a piece of jewelry in a cloth, autofocus, shoot, look at the result. No film, no cost. Adjust as needed. The result is the key. It isn't hard! I'm not a Canon guy - but there are good ones here. Keep it simple, you can do it!
kaowdo - There are lots of videos on the Internet that are specialized to one specific model, and I believe if you Google "Canon EOS SL1 how to use", you will find some. Youtube is full of helpful videos. Don't give up, and don't be afraid of your camera. Watch the videos again and again if you need to. Nobody will know how many times you watch them. I'm pretty sure nobody noticed how many times I watched them. Also, to get comfortable with handling your camera you can put the top dial on "program AE" mode and use it like a point & shoot (like Ken Stern said). Enjoy!
Thanks. Only 2 steps. I think I can do that!
YouTube is also very helpful. Just search "Canon sl1 how to". There are many. This one by B&H, talked about a creative auto mode which I think will ease some of your fears.
https://youtu.be/9VXRihOlGmQOr, as someone else said, find a teenaged techie to help you out.

Try this. Read the manual, not the whole thing, just the first few pages. Turn the camera on. Make sure it's set to Auto.Go outside and point the camera at the first thing yousee. Press theshutter button. If you do this often enough, pretty soon you will get a feel for what the camera will do. Don't be afraid of mistakes, weall make them. There is no better way to learn than by just doing it.
Thank you. I'll try that.
There's no shame in using Auto mode or P mode. And if at some later date you find that the camera tends to use too small an aperture you can put it in Av mode, or if you find it's using too slow a shutter speed you can put it in Tv mode. Learning one thing at a time is usually the best way to learn.

I feel for you, I'm in the same boat. I'm a chalk and blackboard learner and as things become more digitised I found it harder to learn them. Eventually I found out I had a form of Dyslexia, which put my mind at ease - but didn't help with getting to grips with camera or software.
If anyone can help you out, these people can. A great team!
The best way to learn is to get some basic knowledge of what you want to do, which apparently have done, and then practice, practice, practice.
