This species, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker visits every summer and yesterday there were two in our yard. It is on its favourite tree. Notice all of the holes in the tree trunk! The Sapsuckers create the holes and as the sap starts to flow, butterflies are also attracted to this food source; after the sapsucker has dined.
Its naming yellow- bellied might be confusing to some as the yellow is not often outstandingly showing, however I have a photo from my archives that does show the yellow on its belly!
