I have collected a library of PS books. Hardly ever use them. I have 2 computers, 1 I use for working on PS, the second one I use for looking up answers to problems on Google.

Regarding books: as has been said, the versions of PS change rapidly. However, if you're new to it, my experience has been that the basic stuff (99.9% of what I use, remains pretty consistent). I'm not a power user, but I continue to think of things I wish I could do, and so far I continue to find the information I need, which works just fine with my outdated version of PS.

Maybe a specific question can be answered here. I am having trouble finding an answer.

I want to make layers of two photos I have in the file bar in Photoshop. I can open either as a background layer. How do I make a layer out of the other one?

I’ e seen videos on how to do it to replace a background, which is what I want to do, but now can’t find any.

The problem I have with these videos is there is no way I can keep up with the cursor going to places I never do and the rapid yakking. This didn’t work.

Try opening up both images. Next windows 2up vertical. Next, Go one of the images (left one for illustration). next ctrl-a (windows) to capture the entire image. Next click on the move symbol hold shift key down if you want image centered, drag the left image onto the right image. Before dragging make sure you have either merged the left-hand layer to are on the main image and not on an adjustment.
If you still have problems let me know and I will try to sort them out. I am using PS 6.0

Thanks. It doesn’t work for me to “open both images”. One just replaces the other one.

Thanks!

I haven’t done much with Photoshop because Lightroom works for what I need to do.
But I’m interested now and then with doing things I know it can do. But the interface really challenges me because I use it so infrequently.

The best thing about Lightroom, besides working well, it prepares you for Photoshop.
The other thing is that most photogs find that Lightroom is enough,

Lightroom is enough for 95% of what I want to do. I find it simple and am proficient with it.

But you can’t do what you can do with layers in Photoshop. Unfortunately it is what I need for some things I’d like to do like changing backgrounds. But I use it so rarely I usually end up frustrated. The user interface is stupid!
