I want to sway into the "Mirrorless" arena, I already own a few Canon cameras and was thinking of upgrading my 5D Mk3 to a Mk4, but got talked into the mirrorless field by the camera rep, who happens to be a good friend outside of his daily employment. Looking at the Canon Rp or R, Rp is currently $999.99 and the R is $1799.99, I'm not a big fan of the mode wheel on the R since its an extra few steps to get to the setting I want, not such a big game changer since 95% of the time I'm in "M", while the Rp is like the old Canons. I would like to hear from Canon mirrorless guys only on this subject, thank you. The main reason other than I'm a big Canon guy is because I own about 7 lenses I can use with an adapter, eventually after I've regained my savings I will eventually get a few native lenses, maybe! Thanks in advance.

It really depends on what you want to shoot, or what you need your camera capable of shooting. The EOS RP puts 26MP of full-frame mirrorless glory into your hands at a reasonable price, but not with all the capabilities of the 5DIII and 5DIV. But really, to maximize the $999 spent on this body, any EOS mirrorless body, you need RF lenses. If you can't break the chain that is your mirror, we're starting to see used EOS 5DIVs appearing in the $1500 range.

If you're not keeping an EOS film body, there's not reason to retain EF lenses with an RF-mount EOS body, if the RF version has been released. As the minimum, sell off the EF lenses that overlap with either the RF 24-105 (either version) or the RF 15-35.

Forgot to mention it’s landscapes and some portraits I shoot, not too much action, that’s why I have a 7D mk2

I don't have an EOS mirrorless body. I'm holding onto my pair of 5DIIIs through a planned 10-year useful life and crossing the 150,000 shutterlife estimate for both bodies. I use a 24MP Sony a7II for my even older Canon FD lenses. I have a plan for all my EF lenses to be converted (or retained) based on my desire to continue to shoot film with an EOS 1v. You can use Ken Rockwell's site for demonstrations (any site) of the superior performance of the RF lenses. He's also just posted a 4-camera comparison of the four EOS R models.

I'm going to be willing to give up some much-loved primes for RF zooms. I'm also thinking of having one of the 5DIIIs converted to infrared as their resale value has dropped below $1000 in most listings. What I keep as EF will be the bare minimum for film and / or infrared work, possibly just the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II.

My Sony experience corresponds with all the mirrorless discussion. There are both trivial differences and significant differences in the shooting capabilities of the two camera types, DSLR vs MILC. But, a digital sensor is a digital sensor. The quality of the lens along with the lens integration with the mirrorless body via programmable controls is where the image quality difference occurs. Hence, my comment about 'maximizing' the investment into a mirrorless body. The maximum upgrade that is not mirrorless is the 5DIV.

How do the images look on your Sony with the legacy canon lenses?

I have had an R for about a year and a half. Had a 5DIV prior to that. Ended up selling it because the R does everything I need and more compared to the 5DIV, with superior auto-focus besides. I have never even held an RP so I can't give a comparison. Sold all my EF lenses except my 100-400 L II and 100 L Macro. Both work superbly on the R. The controls on the R are somewhat different then the 5DIV, but, unless you are constantly switching back and forth it's no big deal. Like buying a new car. Things are different but you adapt and after a while you hardly notice the difference. I shoot a bit of everything. Sports, wildlife, landscapes, ships, planes, etc. Don't miss my 5DIV or 7DII at all.
The RF lenses are outstanding. I currently have four, a RF 15-35 f/2.8 L, a RF 50 f/1.2 L, a 85mm f/1.2 L and a RF 24-105 f/4 L. All give excellent results. I have found that the 85 is very good for shooting basketball games. The 24-105 is an excellent all-around lens.
There are a few irritations. For example, the control ring on the lenses and adapter can be set for a number of functions and I sometimes change settings without realizing it. The control bar on the back of the R is, for me, useless. I don't care for the design of the power on-off switch. Minor things.
If it is in your budget you may want to wait for the R6 to get into consumer's hands and be reviewed. I'm waiting for the R5 reviews to come in. That will probably be my next unnecessary expense!

Depends on the lens. I've posted numerous examples, some identified in the posting title, otherwise identified in the comments. These are nearly all FD lenses on the Sony. https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-655779-1.html Can you pick out the one EF lens from the group?

The benefit of mirrorless for manual focus lenses are the EVF, that helps in two ways:

1. The 10x zoom in the view finder. Here, you can 'see' the fine details as you perfect the focus with the camera raised to the eye.

2. The focus highlights called 'focus peaking'.

The focus peaking has what I call a 'shimmer' of color that shows where the plane of focus exists. I use a red color. I think the color can also be white and yellow. Alas, this shimmer is not as accurate as viewing the image details at the 10x zoom. But, since the lens is manual focus, once you've focused very accurately, that shimmer helps to confirm the direction of adjustment for any subsequent changes on the focus ring of the lens. These two features are features common to all the various mirrorless brands.

Here's an older post that looks specifically at FD vs EF: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-651545-1.html

Thank you for your input, & I can relate to the phrase “unnecessary expense”.

I have the EOS R and a 5Dm4. Very happy with the R and adapted lens. If the R5 continues to get good reviews I’ll start selling off gear, buy one and convert to R-series lenses.

As to your R or RP question for landscape and portrait work the R would be a great choice

I went for the RP with the EF adapter. Ef lenses work great. For street photography have it with an EF 28/1.8 lens. EF lenses work just as well with the adapter as they work on DSLR Canon bodies. I did not like the layout, controls of the R. I might be interested in the 24-240 RF lens as it has very good reviews.

I would wait for the new R6 and R5 with 8 stop IBIS. They are the going to compete with Sony in the mirrorless game. They have new RF lenses that are really affordable. 600mm for $699. 800mm for $899.
