Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. A thistle is the floral emblem of Scotland, and according to legend, the sharp prickles caused invading Norsemen to cry out in pain, alerting the defending Scots of a sneak attack, possibly in the actual Battle of Largs in 1263.

Thankyou John, Jim, Nolan! I've been out looking for bugs a lot this spring / summer, and coming away with just flowers many times while being impatient for bugs. The hollyhocks are in a public garden on the walk to a field of wildflowers. I've been watching their progress for weeks and they bloomed last week. Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you Ken! Our lack of rain the past few weeks hasn't cut back on the flowers, as near as I can tell, but the grass is suffering.
