If you go to Devil's Tower, take the scenic route that goes through the town of Hulett, WY. Cute historic, Western town, antiques, great little restaurant on the main street thru town with high quality food for such an unusual location. Lot of rolling hills type landscapes, lots of motorcycle tourers.
Also, there is a Conoco gas station after the I-25 intersection with the road that goes 97 miles to Shoshoni-it has surprisingly good Cajun chicken meals and homemade cole slaw and various tourist souveniers. Nice employees there.
Ocean lake. 134 miles away so outside of your range, but unbelievable fishing. Not trout-mostly crappie, some largemouth bass, a few bream. Fished it many years ago with a fly rod, 3 flies at a time-2 black, 1 red. Frequent doubles, pulled 3 out one cast. Rented a light johnboat type craft, with the stern warning that if I saw a storm brewing in the west, get off the lake ASAP. With nothing to block the wind, waves apparently get “ocean-sized” during storms, hence the name.

I heartily endorse visiting Devil’s Tower as well. I made the side trip 5 years ago and was very glad I did. Pleasant hike around the base, and there were a few climbers tackling the steep slope headed to the top. Sacred to the Indians, it’s treated respectfully. I was there mid-morning but I can see where sunrise or sunset colors could be fantastic.

Next week I will be visiting family near Casper for a few days. What would you reccomend I see/photograph within 100 miles of there?
Also is it worth trout fishing in the Alcova reservoir?
Thanks in advance
The Custer battlefield is somewhat close by in Montana. That is definitely well worth visiting if you have not been there.
As for fishing in the area the North Platte River is known to be a place for great trout fishing as is Alcova Reservoir. If I was going to be in the area I would ask to join you. Good luck. Check on YouTube for more information or call one of the fly fishing shops in the Casper area.

I was there in October so leaving really early still got me to the tower just before dawn at the end of the 3ish hour drive. You can walk the entire circuit around the base in about an hour or so and see the museum. If you're not going to be back to the area, this is well worth the day and drive. Drive off in all directions on the county roads and get different long-distance perspectives. There's a huge prairie dog colony within the monument property if they're out and active.

That is a great suggestion and I completely agree. I have been to Devil's Tower many times and always have a great time as well as get some great photographs. The drive itself to get there is very scenic as well regarding wildlife.

AYERS NATURAL BRIDGE Down toward Douglas is very nice. The river runs under the rock bridge. Lots of red rock. Take a lunch.
Very beautiful place to spend a little time!
Devils tower like CHG_Canon suggested is a good one. I took my best HDR picture at Ayers Natural Bridge Park in the fall a few years back. Another great place to take pictures is the giant coal mine in Wright county. Good luck and let’s see some posts when you get back.

I think it is called Independence rock. A stopping spot for the Oregon Trail. If I remember it is up the North Platte river. Great fishing just below a small dam. Beautiful Rainbow trout.

Would your family who live there have any idea of what is within 100 miles of their home?

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions. There are so many I am going to have to quit thanking you individually so here is a general THANK YOU.

I second this suggestion for Devil's Tower. It is an immense and almost overwhelming sight. I was there last year and could not believe the enormity and impressive appearance of it. One of the photos I took I post processed and then had cropped slightly and blown up to 16X20. It now hangs on my wall. Only the second wall decoration my wife has allowed on our living room walls.
There is also Wind River Canyon about 2 hours north west.

If you like history go to the Fetterman Massacre site and the Fort Kearney site right near it. Also, maybe the Hole in the Wall of Butch Cassidy fame or the site of the KC Ranch of the Johnson County War notoriety.
Also, near Casper is the Independence Rock State Park which consists of a very huge "rock" that was a stopping place for wagon trains heading west in the 1800's. It is covered with the names of pioneers who carved or painted their names on the rock. Much of it is fenced off to protect the pioneers' names and graffiti but you can walk to the top of it for great views of the moon---oops I mean of the Wyoming country side. It takes about half an hour and plenty of photo ops are available.
If you are a fly fisherman float and fish the Grey Reef section of the North Platte River or visit the Miracle Mile of the N Platte, a little further away.
The north platte river runs through Casper.
