OK, here's my last reply. It is a bit vague about the monkeys. Did each elephant see the same 3 monkeys or 3 different ones for each elephant ... the riddle does not say. So depending upon the two possibilities as to the number of monkeys, the answer could be either 10 (1 rabbit / 3 monkeys / 6 tortoises) OR if each elephant saw 3 different monkeys from the other 8 elephant, the answer could be 82 (1 rabbit / 27 monkeys / 54 tortoises).

2: Same number, except you did not specify that the elephants were actually going to the river.

Which is correct depends on your command of semantics.
