interesting facts:

1. its pretty orange and black colors warns birds not to mess with it.
2. glands on the abdomen produce and release a stinky defensive fluid
that also discourages birds not to mess with it.

Great set, Merry. Well done.

Gulf fritillary caterpillars enjoy the leaves and even the fruit of the passion flower plant, which grows wild here in the Atlanta GA area. For a few years we had sort of a ranch for the little beauties in our front bed near the mailbox. I have many pictures of "gulfies", from caterpillar to adults, even - gasp - a mating pair, shot from a considerable distance. So far I've had no luck in capturing egg laying, it is extremely fast and random, nor a butterfly emerging from the chrysalis.
This year the butterflies are yet to appear; we have their forage ready.

thank you scott...we finally got some...saw them on the lantana and butterfly bushes.
i live south of atlanta, and butterflies have been scarce except for a couple of yellow
swallowtails.
