1. its pretty orange and black colors warns birds not to mess with it.
2. glands on the abdomen produce and release a stinky defensive fluid
that also discourages birds not to mess with it.

thank you, mike! that was actually the first gulf fritillary i have seen in a while.
i've seen a few yellow swallowtails and that's it for butterflies so far.
