I can't see the pattern well enough to say but I am thinking Copperhead.

Sure looks line the copperheads we have in the mountains here in NC.
Light color is the southern & darker like the one in the photo are Northern Copperheads.

Biggest danger is they won't move & you can step on one. I look because as little
toxin as they have, it will not make your shooting day if you get bit.

It only takes one good Roadrunner to take care of that snake.

It's definitely a cotton-mouth, a pit viper. I, personally, would not kill it; would just make sure it was relocated to a place away from people. They play an important role in the eco-system and are good to have around. They eat small fish, frogs, etc.

Thanks for commenting, kenpic. He's long gone now.

All internet images point to a Moccasin. Thanks for looking, Maturo.

If only we had them here, alberio. That would have made some awesome images.

These Brown Thrashers escorted this snake, which appears to be a juvenile Moccassin, out of my yard and into a side pasture. they refused to let it stay in the area in which they were feeding. I would have killed the snake but I was too busy taking photos.

I would say it's not a moccasin, it's a banded watersnake. Not poisonous good snake. In Missouri it's illegal to kill snakes, poisonous or not. Most all will do what they can to avoid trouble.

Look at the head. Shovel, shovel, shut up in MO. Don't need the vet (or hospital) bills, plus entirely legal here.
