I have the Nikkor 105mm F2.8 & would not be without it.

It's a Nikkor after all. :)

If the 2.8 is anything like the old 105 F2.5 that I used for so many years on my film and digital Nikons, BUY IT!

I sure miss my 105 f2.5 but unfortunately it was stolen from my dorm room many years ago. A good friend of mine (I was his studio assistant for a few years) has the 105 micro and loves it. It's really sharp corner to corner. If you are looking for the buttery bokah of the old 105 f2.5 get your hands on the new 105 f1.4. That's the closest that I have been able to come to the old 105 f2.5. Unfortunately, the 105 f1.4 won't focus anywhere near as close as the micro 105.

[quote=jerryc41]Before I buy almost anything, I look for reviews and comparisons. One might be better in one area but not in another. Price could also be a consideration.

Right off the bat, I see one major difference: $1,900 vs $500. Let's say the Nikon lens is better. Is it that much better?

Nikon website lists two 105mm micro lenses for $775 and $810 (on sale). Can't find a $1,900 one.

The Nikon 105mm f1.4 is on sale for $1897. It is a wonderfully sharp short telephoto but is not a macro lens. The Nikon 105mm f2.8 Micro Nikkor is on sale for $807. Prices are from B+H. Nikon calls their close focus lenses micro lenses while the rest of the world calls them macro lenses. Don't ask me why 'cause I haven't got a clue.

Another way to check lenses before shelling out a large investment is to rent the lens. I have done this a few time to test them.

I own 2 Tamron 90mm Macros. One stays in the studio with a D800E for product photography. The other one goes into the real world and does a great job with anything I ask of it. Very happy with the performance. And the convenience of such a wide focus range. No reason to spend more $ for the Nikon brand on the barrel. Who would know it is or isn't there. It's the pictures, the results that matter.

Bragging rights??? YGTBK

Neither...

I would recommend a third possibility... The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 OS USD Macro lens is a better value than either of the above.... currently on sale for $469 (reg. $969). That's almost $200 less than the Tamron and nearly half the price of the Micro-Nikkor.

According to this article, the Sigma 105mm also has much better image quality than the Micro-Nikkor 105mm: https://petapixel.com/2020/04/15/macro-lens-test-canon-nikon-sony-laowa-sigma-and-tamron-compared/ Aside from image quality, the Sigma pretty much matches the Micro-Nikkor feature for feature. The Sigma might even have a more useful focus limiter and better image stabilization.

Frankly, I was surprised at the above lens test comparison. The Micro-Nikkor 105mm has near cult status reputation. I can't help but wonder if there was a problem with the example used in those tests. Most macro lenses from any manufacturer are better than that! OTOH, the Micro-Nikkor 105mm is one of the oldest designs in that comparison. (The Sony and Canon lenses in article are only useful for comparison sake, since neither can be used on a Nikon F-mount camera.)

I use Canon gear, including their earlier EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro lens (not the newer L/IS version). Other macro I use include the Tamron 60mm f/2 (crop only); a vintage, manual focus only Tamron SP 90mm; Canon 180mm f/3.5L USM macro, and TS-E 45mm f/2.8 Tilt-Shift (for small product photography... I've also used the TS-E 90mm f/2.8 in the past, but don't currently have one). I use a number of macro extension tubes to do close-ups with a variety of other, non-macro lenses, too.

If I were shopping for a macro lens today, the Sigma 105mm OS HSM would be right at the top of my list!
Neither... br br I would recommend a third possib... (show quote)

I recently purchased the Sigma 105mm, f/2.8 lens I use with both my Nikon D810 and D500. After several months of use I can say I would definitely buy it again. And the price point is relatively low. I realize it's not on your two lens list but I don't really know how you narrowed down your list to those two lenses. I primarily bought the Sigma 105mm because I own a Sigma 180mm, f/2.8 that I think is crazy sharp, but it's heavy and sometimes I don't want to pack it around. If you are at all interested I posted sort of a "user review" of the Sigma 105mm with a few sample shots here: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-640268-1.html

Not to put a speed bump in your plans but take a minute to consider the Tokina atx-i 100mm macro lens. Very good reviews, significant $$$ savings, and on sale now.

I have one and love it. Had a Sigma 105mm before and this is every bit as good....or better.

I have this lens in Canon livery. I use it on both ff and crop bodies. Second your opinion.

Anyone who has either of these lenses I would like to hear from you......I can't decide which one to buy

#1 - Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens

#2 - Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD Lens for Nikon F

the lens will be used mostly for 1 - Water Drop Photography
2 - Butterflies / insects

I'm not sure where all the references to a $1900 105mm f2.8 Nikkor Micro lens are coming from. Current list price is $896, which is about what the price has been since I bought mine a little over 10 years ago, and it's on sale for a little less than that. I have found this lens to be perfect for the macro projects that I do, and it also is an excellent short telephoto for general use. (I also have a 60mm Micro, mostly for slide and negative copying.) I don't shoot insects as a rule, so my only question is whether the 105mm focal length is long enough for butterflies. Someone else will have to give insight around whether 180mm or so might be less frustrating for that.

But I have been very pleased with the lens, and it's not one that I'd be likely to voluntarily turn loose of...

Hi..
Thanks for the information......

Can you tell me if you have the "focus stacking" setting on your Nikon D810?....

I have the Tokina 100mm macro and it is really good BUT it is not compatible when I put my Nikon D850in the "focus stacking" setting and I need that.

I have given the Sigma a thought too as I have owned Sigma lenses in the past and they were all good.....

I assume this question is directed at me (hit the "quote reply" button in the future). My Nikon D810 does not have a built-in focus stacking feature. So I cannot answer the question about compatibility with a Sigma lens in that regard. But if I was forced to guess, I would think if it doesn't work with the Tokina it probably won't work with the Sigma. Just a WAG (wild ass guess) though.
