I use that range because the smaller your F stop number the less depth of field. The larger your number the more DOF. But then lighting becomes a factor in it too. That is why I recommended an O-flash they are pretty cheap for around $30 but they will allow you sufficient lighting and a the ability to use the smaller apertures. Take a look at the true macro section of this site check out some of the other setups and user pictures that is where I gained a lot of my knowledge on macro. There are some amazingly smart people here that are willing to share their techniques and help you out.
I am attaching a link to the setup thread. If you just wonder around the macro forum and read some of the posts there I think you will find them useful. There is a guy named nikonian that is the master of this topic. Never be afraid to ask questions either people here will gladly help..... At least most of them.
