I absolutely love my Df, but one thing that is missing is an on camera flash.
My question is this. For very basic operation, such as auto fill flash, what would you suggest? I'm looking for integrated function such as I get with my D300 (using it's pop up flash).
I have a Yongnuo YN968N, which works, but I cannot get it to work "automatically" it seems that I may be setting it up wrong. It works fine in manual.
Comments?

I don't know what D300 you own. All of the D300's I know has a popup flash.
Stick with Nikon; they have designed flashes to be compatible with their cameras in ways other flashes are not. The SB 400 can be had at KEH for around $150. The SB 500 is much larger, more versatile, still being produced, and goes for $250. (Since you don't need it a lot, i'd go with the convenience and lower cost of the SB 400.)

my bad, confused it with one of my other Nikon bodies, I've corrected it
I have both the SB 800 and the SB 300. Get the 300 or a used 400. Small light weight and perfect for fill flash. The 300 uses 2 AAA batteries and the 400 2 AA. I photograph some cover bands in local dark bars and the 300 has more than adequate light with a small dial up in ISO. If you have been primarily an available light shooter, start small and only move up if it doesn't give you what you need.

Older Nikon bodies? You must have the single digit D series from Nikon. Only recently Nikon don't put the popup flash in bodies which is less than the top of the line. The first was the Df then the D500 and D850 and now the D780.
I will join in the chorus recommending the Nikon SB-400. It is the greatest answer to a simple, light weight, rugged flash with TTL capability. I currently have two (purchased on eBay) one with my D610 bag and one with my D7100 bag. I have written on this site about them and highly recommend you look at Ken Rockwell's review
https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb400.htm.
I cannot recommend this flash unit highly enough.

we now shoot with a D850, and I haven't used the D300 in years. And when I did and needed flash I always had the SB800 on it, and never even thought of using the popup flash

I hope the OP doesn't feel offended but I asked if the OP got the Df for a good deal. In my opinion people who paid full price for the Df don't want the popup flash. It was the reason Nikon didn't put the popup flash in the Df because they believed people who buy the Df like that better.

True that!. The film cameras it was created to copy didn't have PUF.
i have both the sb700 and a couple Sunpak U4000DF...I like them both...the 4000 can be set for nikon or canon cameras...the 700 would probably meet your needs with full integration with your system...

I also have an SB800 (and an SB600, and an SB700, and an SB910) - they are indeed great flash units, but I think all of these are overkill for what the original poster is looking for. The SB400 will fit the bill perfectly.
I have 2 SB-400s and use them all the time. I have a friend who is selling off his gear and he has a SB-400 and offered it to me for a low price. I'll test it out and if you want just send me a private message here and we'll work out a price. I think I could get it to you for between $40-50 with the case. They are perfect for fill flash, bounce is a plus and they go to sleep and wake up with camera power on/off or shutter tap. Super lightweight as well and save your camera from running it's batteries down with the built in flash. Just let me know if you are interested. Need to downsize here anyway. Had an ongoing 4 year gas attack and the house looks like a camera store. Can't find the front door anymore.
I use an SB300 on my Df - small, light , tilt head and a rubber band and white card for indirect flash
