I have two Df's and for basic fill-in flash I use a Nikon SB-400 Speedlight or a Nikon SB-700 for heavier-duty needs. The SB-400 is a nice little compact and lightweight unit with a "low profile" that looks great on the Df. And although it's now discontinued by Nikon, you can find used ones on eBay, generally for less than $125. There are currently quite a few listed on eBay.

I am partial to the SB300 because it can tilt and therefore bounce from a white card and is more pocketable. The price seems very close to the SB400.

The Metz flash is perfect. Simple fill for everyday shots. Put it on the camera and turn it on. No setting anything. (I think TTL must be enabled, but I think that is the default.) If I want a flash for macro, or need more power, I have other choices, but this is exactly what I wanted.

I hope the OP doesn't feel offended but I asked if the OP got the Df for a good deal. In my opinion people who paid full price for the Df don't want the popup flash. It was the reason Nikon didn't put the popup flash in the Df because they believed people who buy the Df like that better.

Not offended at all. The Df is the perfect camera for me. I learned on an FTn, followed by a whole host of other bodies over the years. My favorite film camera was an FM2. I had never owned an AF camera. I didn't see the need. I know how to focus.

Like I said earlier, set the ISO, shutter speed and aperture and push the button. Voila, you get a picture. I understand (and use) many of the other features of today's cameras, but to me, just understanding the basic exposure triangle is fine. If the camera isn't "doing what I want" I just put it in Manual and shoot away.

Thank you to all who offered advice. I appreciate your taking the time.

OK, so ... did you decide on a flash unit?

May I ask one more thing? Where does Metz make the flash?

Thanks! I am kind of surprise that Metz could make a $79 flash in Germany. I think I will get one too.
