Assuming that the boy is additive with the objects he is holding.
And not multiplicative, is would be the case were the boy and his objects constants or variables:
y=ABC would be interpreted as y = A x B x C and not as y = A + B + C.

I did not go through all 16 pages so you may have been told this before. Math problems containing + and - and X and division have a particular "Order of Operation". You do all of the multiplication/division first. then the addition and subtraction.
