I do appreciate the recommendation but want to use my existing bodies.

So with that in mind pay attention to Gene’s remark that all cameras take decent pix. Choose a FL range and get a lens. Or if you can’t really decide on a range, let the KEH inventory-of-the-moment choose for you. It’s not rocket science and not life or death and not a lot of money.

Decision-wise I sympathize. But I cannot “feel your pain” cuz I never decided for myself. Both my 24-120 and 28-300 were the kit lenses supplied with my cameras. The only time I do decide between them is when packing a bag. If it’s any help at all I can tell you the 24-120 gets packed far more often. But acoarst that reflect my subject choices and photo habits. YMMV.

I believe that claiming the Nikkor 28-300mm “deserves to be maligned” is totally unjustified. There isn’t a lens on earth that is 100% perfect, including the primes. Yes, the lens has limitations, however, my rational for owning, using, and even recommending it as a “walk-around” and travel lens is based on solid ground.

For argument’s sake, let’s say that the lens loses sharpness after 150mm, which in my experience is not massively noticeable. That gives me an overwhelming quality range for about 90% of what I want to shoot on a vacation or a day out. And then it gives me the extra reach for a subject where the maximum 300mm come in handy with very decent results that can be further improved in PP. Of course, when I plan for a photo shoot where I need my heavy artillery that is a different story.

Hello my hedgehog family,

I would like some suggestions. I have the trinity 2.8 lens collection and several others to compliment those; however, what I would like to have is a zoom lens that would cover a wider focal distance range from maybe 14 to 150 or longer as a go to walk around lens to keep from having to carry two lenses.

My Sigma Art 24-105 f/4 is the travel lens on my D850 95% of the time. Not light but very sharp.

Exactly !!!

With “less than stellar” wide ratio zooms I just see the extreme ends as a buffer zone. Writing off a small part of the range doesn’t mean I’m not getting what I paid for ... with a lens that costs so much less to begin with.

So my 28-300 is a fine 28-250 and an even better 35-200. And my 24-120 is a terrific 28-105. Plus there’s no loss when using the extremes of the range with some subjects in some situations.

Those situations are not so rare. Actually MORE rare are the situations where a premium grade lens really shows what it’s worth. The rather common combination of no tripod and raised ISO is a great leveler between the best lenses and the ordinary average lenses.

The other day I did some pix of a huge ceramic mosaic. Perfect sun position, tripod, low ISO and 80MP for insane detail ... and acoarst NOT a “walk about travel zoom”. But this was a very exacting preplanned shoot. This thread is all about quite the opposite of that. Reasonably sane peeps do not do their “walk about” with a tripod and just a 90mm, shooting huge nearly unmanageable file sizes.

I took over 300 shots with my 28-300 during a construction event at my son-in-law's farm yesterday and was for the most part pleased with the results. I have sharper lenses, but this one had the needed reach and performed well.
