My 2 cents:
D850 deserves top glass. 70-200 2.8 VR or 300 and 500pf. Cheap will disappoint.
I bought the new 70-300 E and not happy. Terrible distracting bokeh an Not tack sharp. Older 200-400 kills them all.

Absolutely, I have the trinity; 12-24, 24-70, 70-200 all 2.8 and the 200-500 5.6 and several other additions. I was just thinking about a lens that would cover a couple to keep from having to carry an additional lens.

200-400 is outstanding on D7500!
Thom poo poos it but I don’t try to shoot 200 yd shots either. Love mine. Can’t beat bokeh at F4. Outstanding for used $$. 70-200 f2.8 VR I bought in 2007? Outperforms everything else in my bag. 15 nikkors, never cheaped out while working. Tried it lately and disappointed. Money walks...

I have all the Nikkor lenses mentioned above. I too wanted one all around lens for most occasions. January this year I bought a Tamron 35-150 mm 2.8 lens for my everyday lens. I tried it and loved it. Lighter than most Nikkor lenses and much sharper than my 24-120 or the 28-300. I find that I am using it more and more. I have it on my D850 90% of the time.

Thank you for this suggestion. The OP has an issue that so many of us face, with all the usual issues pro and con the available Nikon glass. I am a great fan of my Tamron 100-400, but was not aware of the 35-150. Worth a look.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens

This is best IMO for D850

Well look like only the 28-300 is available and it's not a very good lens. In my opinion you are in great position as you have choices.
1. You can play the muscle and carry all the lenses so you have everything you need.
2. Or you can play the brain by limiting yourself to the 24-70 and yet finding suitable subjects to create great images.

Are you hoping for a 15-180 f2 Nikkor weighing 9 ounces? (They don't make it yet!) You will have to compromise on having a fast aperture, but Nikon does have a very good 28-300 zoom. My 24-120 f4 is excellent for covering wide to medium tele.

I agree the 24-120 is a sweet range for a carry lens.
Wish Canon had that lens.

I have the 28-300 and I use it a fair amount on FX cameras in the 20 MPx range. Yes, it's not the sharpest lens, and for important work I use the 14-24-70-200-500 but it's really flexible and if I don't want to carry the camera bag full of lenses, it does a reasonable job. Family and vacation shots are just fine (for me). I don't sell photos and maybe my standards are just too low, but it works for me for casual shots.

28 to 300 !!!

Been all over the world: Africa, Galapagos, South and Central America, Alaska, Morocco, Europe, etc. Have 20 by 30 and larger prints in my house and have sold/given prints to friends, etc.

Will work with tele-adapters if needed!!!

You will have a lot of fun with that lens plus the holy trinity. add 200 to 400 for safari work.

I love my Tamron 35-150 - versatile and sharp, it basically lives on my Z6. I have a 28-300 - thought I'd love it but am not at all thrilled with it - should have bought the Tamron 100-400.

Yes, the new Tamron 35-150 I would suggest strongly.

I might also suggest the older Tamron 28-200 ED IF XR lens which I use on my Sony A99. This lens can be had for about $50 now - mostly used. For $50 you can try one - and see - if you are at all adventurous ! and do not mind dumbing down for a little convenience.

I am a Nikon shooter, and I own a closet full of Nikon and Nikon mount lenses for my D800 and D810, so I am fully invested in Nikon. I was contemplating the same thing you are at this point in time, but I could not bring myself to spend almost $1000 on a lens that I know I wouldn't use because of the image quality I experienced using several copies in the past. So I made an unusual choice. (see below).

Before you make a decision, look at the list of recommended lenses for the D850. If a Nikkor lens is not on the list, I will venture that you may not be thrilled with it.

https://www.dslrbodies.com/cameras/camera-blogs/the-d850-blog/the-best-lenses-for-the.html

The dilemma is that you have an outstanding camera that takes amazingly detailed images. Putting a mediocre lens like a 28-300 or similar on it is like owning a Maserati and buying the 4 tire special for $400 at Costco. Yeah, it will work, but you won't be happy. If you don't care about image quality then it's probably a good fit.

Thinking out of the box a bit - just about nothing beats the convenience of a Sony RX10M4. It provides very good image quality, has an excellent zoom range, with an equivalent 24-600mm F2.4-F4 lens designed by Ziess, and a extremely fast hybrid auto focus system borrowed from their higher end cameras. If you are looking to avoid changing lenses in the field and are even considering a 28-300, I think you will be far happier with the results from the Sony. Here are a few samples for you to consider as you make a decision.

I am a Nikon shooter, and I own a closet full of N... (show quote)

My friend, a retired professional photographer, who has used Nikon, Hasselblad and view cameras all during his photographic experience and loves Nikon told me he bought the Sony as you suggest and says it equals and often betters his Nikon D800E for sharpness. According to him he could do 98% of what he did for years with a Nikon.

That's my daily lens, but some have said it's lacking in top quality. How about non-Nikon long zooms? Tamron has an 18-400mm for about $600.

I don't know but the number 18 makes me think it's a DX lens.
