Medicine is based on good science, however the practice of medicine involves not only results of good science
but the experience, opinions, and personalities of medical practitioners. This general pattern holds for all professions that are based on science. Seldom is a “fact” an absolutely truth that remains so forever. Science is ongoing and frequently results in changes in our knowledge that we once thought was solidly true. Consequently, for me, there is very little that I can know to be absolutely true. When decisions have to be made, we should use the best information available at the time while remaining open to changing when new scientific results so indicate. It seems to me that current attempts to cope with Covid 19 pretty much follow this general patterm. One last thought: Decisions that affect others can seldom be based solely on science. Our values are most important. For me, the very high value that most place on individual human life is first. So, as we apply science to our coping with Covid my priority is on saving as many individual lives as possible, even if it means giving up some personal freedoms for a time.

I’m sorry you feel that way.
Not even Mr. Trump has said that.
What has Dr. Fauci said that is deceptive?
What has Dr. Fauci stolen?

A keeping everyone shut in is also killing people too. I am going out each day. There are no people with COVID in my zip code and there are not more that the low single digits of folks that are hospitalized with COVID. Actually, think the number is zero. Even if it were more, I have the choice to live or go nuts. I choose the former.

Then you are blessed. My county has had 27 deaths and 847 confirmed cases. We don’t infect more because of use of masks and ‘social distancing’.

The number of positive cases in an area depends in part on how many tests have been done. I don’t know how you can say there are zero infections in any zip code unless everyone is tested repeatedly. Is that the case where you live?

Be careful here. My in-laws lived in NYC - in Brooklyn. Their building originally housed four families, which they owned the right half of; 1978 when I first visited there, they no longer rented out the upper apartment. Someone who lived in their neighborhood easily could go for a walk. Queens is more so, and Staten Island even more so. From reports, even those living the bigger buildings in Manhattan could go for a walk. So, yes the city is more crowded that we are out here - but most can still get outside if they do it one at a time for awhile.

Your image is a best case scenario, pretty much reserved for the affluent within the city, or the decendents of owners of yesteryear. I may have overgeneralized, or may have failed to account for a minority of NYC proper living conditions.

The following article shows what is more typical of where average folks are living. Far more vertical density and crowding per land area. And these are successes.

Just for the record: NYT is one of the few newspapers left. It survives well in NY because it tells the truth and exposes the many lies this country faces and must work through each and every day. Those that don’t feel it is credible are the ones MOST needing to read it.

Tex-s: No one has ever said you cannot go out. Why do so many of right-wingers say this? Is this to make social-distancing guidelines unreasonable? Spinning it to make it look unfair.

What the guidelines say is wear a mask. People that don’t want to wear masks are not just risking their own health, but rather are risking the lives of others around them. They just seem to care ONLY about themselves. This is, to me, very sad.
If you want to go out, more power to you. That is great. Just don’t violate “my space” and wear your mask 😷.

This is ‘average folk’ in a minority of the city. Total population of Manhattan is 1.5M - out of 8.1M in the city ..... my wife knows a student who was raised in a nicer part farther South in Manhattan, so a much better survey would be needed to say how many actually have access to outdoors in the city.

Synopsis?

The best course of action is to take a deep breath and hold it, hide in a closet, wait for the all clear or death, whichever comes first.

I do agree with what I have heard from the mental health 'experts'. They recommend avoiding obsessing over the news and constant conversations about coronavirus. In other words, be careful but get a life!
