Hi Jerry,
I placed an order on April 20th and still haven't received it.
Their excuse doesn't pass the smell test to me.

On several occasions, I have ordered what I thought would be considered non-essential items from Amazon and received them the next day.

Interesting situation. Because of Covid-19, Amazon says it is giving priority to shipping essential items, so regular items will take longer. Prime delivery has gone from one or two days to a week or two. I don't mean to be skeptical, but I wonder if Amazon is just taking it easy with their shipments and using Covid-19 as an excuse. Since I'm paying over $100 a year for fast delivery, I wonder how long I will be expected to put up with slow deliveries.
I'm just floating an idea here - not complaining about delivery - but if they could deliver in two days during the Christmas rush, why can't they do the same now?
Go easy on me. This is a topic for discussion, not an attack on Amazon.

I feel your pain, here in Canada Amazon.ca went from two days to 30 days but still charged me for prime

My sliding back door lock broke. Since my state was in lock down I didn't want to go to Home Depot so I ordered replacement part from Amazon. The after order email said delivery of this "Prime" item would be in 8 days.
I wrote an email to them complaining that this WAS an essential item as I could not lock the back door to my home until it arrived and asked if they were going to provide a partial rebate of the annual Prime membership due to these shipping delays.
I got my part the next day delivered in by someone in their personal car.

If I had to guess, I would say it is probably due to lower staffing because of the pandemic.
Every time it happens, I usually complain, they are fairly liberal with $10. Gift cards, especially if you are one of their original PRIME member or been a member for quite some time. I've gotten at least 3 since first of year.

Anything ordered from Amazon seems to be taking a month or more to arrive. I too have Prime and had a discussion with an Amazon rep on this very topic. It seems that shipments to medical facilities are taking precedence. That's odd as several items I wanted to order such as disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizers and other items are not available for ordering. Imho, that excuses does not hold water. With the store shelves empty, yeast for baking has not been available for the past 6 weeks. I did find it in a non brand name, but it took four weeks to be delivered. I agree... why pay for Prime when it is clear Amazon cannot honor their commitment. My Prime membership will be cancelled soon. This is an excellent topic.
It will be interesting to hear of others experiences
are you hypothesizing or are you really experiencing a delay in your Amazon shipments? I have not.
Sometimes the article comes from a third party seller. They take longer to deliver

Hmmmm, I didn’t even think about the extra I’m paying for prime. Thanks Jerry for something else I fell like I’m being screwed on out of my control.
I believe your suspicions are correct.
I'm making comparisons. If you fall on hard times, for any reason, and can't make a prime payment, what happens? Although this is devastating, Amazon's wealth and business acumen should be able to handle this setback, although it was unforeseen, with prudent planning, especially if they continue operating. Hence, they give us the song and dance about the virus, justifying slowdowns and not answering phone calls. However, they still allow purchases. As someone said, this doesn't pass the smell test. And finally, consider what the auto insurance companies are doing.

For insurance companies, expenses have gone down.
For Amazon, expenses have gone up {sanitizer, social distancing, etc}.
Not at all comparable.
Don't forget, Amazon's income went up also.

I doubt if their profit as percentage of sales {the thing we looked at in business school} went up.
