I've had mine since December, 1968 - originally because I didn't want to be confused with my students. That is no longer a problem. Now I keep it because I hate shaving. My kids and grand-kids have never seen me without it, but my wife has. However, she wasn't my wife at the time; that's the best reason of all.

My mustache started darkening up some 40 hears ago, it's salt and pepper now... Well mostly salt. Never been shaved. I have had beards sometimes for years. Now I just grow it out for the winter months.

When my wife and I met, 45+ years ago, I had a mustache. Several years later, around 25 years ago, I grew a beard to go with the mustache. My wife didn't like it. On Christmas eve, actually Christmas morn, I worked midnight to 8AM, and decided to shave my beard at work, as I was shaving, I decided to remove the mustache, also. The mustache I'd had for probably close to 30 years.

When I pulled into my driveway and turned my car around, my middle son, around 15 at the time, exited the front door and did not see me until I was getting out of my car. He turned and saw me then ran into the house yelling, "Dad shaved off his mustache!" No mention of the beard, just the mustache.

I had one since I had enough hair to grow one. I shaved it off for the first time after a year of marriage in my late 20's. My wife didn't say anything but wouldn't sit on the same sofa as me until I grew it back.

I had a beard in my early 20s when I got engaged. My mother-in-law insisted I have to shave it off for the wedding. I did, about 2 months before the wedding, and she DID NOT NOTICE IT when I arrived for Easter dinner, and not even throughout the 3-hour visit; my then-fiancé had to point it out to her.

I grew it back a few years after the wedding and said I will keep it until I turn 50, at which time I will shave it off and look 40. My mother-in-law arrived at the house and asked, "Who is that man?"; then she laughed. My wife laughed. My kids had never seen me without a beard, and they laughed. My boss at work did not recognize me when I greeted him in the hallway. I paused, he walked about 6 steps past me, stopped, turned around and said, "Grow it back."

Three months later I was going on a business trip and asked the family if I should take a razor along. Everyone in the family -- including my mother-in-law -- said I should grow it back, which I did.

As a hobby photographer, I say that a good photo is always enhanced by a nice frame.
