Will the new D7500 out perform the older D500?

Are you sure it’s a D500 and not a D5000?
Edit: ah so I see it’s a D5100. Yes the D7500 is a nice upgrade.

That's a good example of how labeling a product can cause confusion. List the price, list the specs, and let the buyer decide.

if you can find a D7200 buy it. There is nothing like it on the market. Nikon best developed camera. Forget about the D7500.

I would say first that he already has a pretty good camera. I would recommend that he has plenty to get very good with cameras if he really takes to it. At that time he will know a lot more about his options: mirrorless, full frame DSLR, whatever else is coming down the road. Admittedly I am not a 7500 user (shoot with a D850 and a D800). Also, any lenses he uses with the 500 will work with the 7500. He may want to look at some lens upgrades rather than a camera change.

If you don't want to read the entire thread, you probably shouldn't waste a response. Not that this will stop anyone.

Considering that the D500 is still Nikon's Flagship DX model, I'd suggest that over ANY other model. Best of luck.

Four pages back, the OP pointed out that he was mistaken in his reporting the camera his friend had. It is a D5100. Most of the past couple dozen posts have ignored that.

I have used the D7500 great higher performance mid range camera, the D500 a very good upper end camera that is more durable and better appointed and the D850 which is my go to work horse. The D7500 is a great step up for the average want to have a good DSLR for photography. If he has a D500 it make little sense to step down to the D7500.

I do read the entire post. My post is a valid response to the question asked.

I read that, and my recommendation still stands. I believe the D500 is better than them all. YMMV.

Well of course. You are absolutely correct.

But the OP's friend was interested in upgrading from the D5100 to the D7xxx series. You answered a question, but it wasn't the question asked. D500 and D7xxx are in entirely different price categories.

I answered his question with MY best answer! As always, he is free to proceed how he wants.
