If it were me, I’d go with a nifty 50. Curious why you’d want to go wide though. What sort of shots would you want at the tail gate?

I take mainly college lacrosse photos. I need a second lens for tailgate and post game pics. Something less intrusive and more wide angle I guess.
Would like to only stick to the 100-400 and one other lens.
Any suggestions would be great.

I shoot the 100-400 L II and the 24-105 L and I employ a 1.4 teleconverter and that takes the cake for me.

Another choice could be the 70-200 L and the 18-135 for portraits possibly. Try it before you buy it.......good luck to you.

Group shots. Candids of kids with parents. Tents, flags, setup and layout of food.

If you want wide angle to short telephoto there is the Canon EFs 15-85 mm. Very good build, and very sharp. It's also smaller and lighter than the Canon 24-105L. The main issue I have with the 24-105 on a crop sensor body is that it doesn't go very wide. The 15-85 will give you significantly wider results.

That is the one I use on my 7DII and found it to be one of my favorites.

I use the 100-400 II on my 7D II as well but my lens to use when not using the 100-400 is the Tamron 16-300. Light, small, versatile and with good IQ. It’s done well for me over the last 3 or 4 years.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is an excellent choice, that goes wider than most and doesn't "waste" with overlap of your 100-400mm.

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is another top choice if you prefer a larger aperture lens, though this also limits the focal length range.

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a wider ranging, good quality "walk around" lens, often offered "in kit" with 7DII. The EF-S 18-135mm "STM" lens is nearly identical, but costs less and uses slower stepper motor autofocus. Still, it might be plenty for your needs. Note the "overlap" with your 100-400's focal lengths.... that can be a good thing at times, but may not be the best thing when you want to only carry two lenses.

I shoot a lot of sports and use a pair of 7DII most of the time....

My 100-400L II is on one of them much of the time.
---- at times when light conditions call for a faster lens, I'll instead use 300mm f/4 or f/2.8.

During the event, I often use 70-200mm on the other camera.
---- I have both f/4 and f/2.8 versions and choose between them based on lighting conditions.
---- Sometimes when I have close access I'll instead use 24-70mm or 28-135mm.

Usually my 24-70mm f/2.8 is used for "tailgate/post-game" shots (good but big, heavy, expensive).
---- When I want a lighter load and light is good, I may substitute a 28-135mm (cheap and good).
---- I just bought, may experiment w/ EOS M5 for this purpose (still sorting out lenses for it).

I also use a full frame camera at times. That's why most of my lenses are EF.

Since you don't appear to be using full frame, the EF-S lenses listed above would be good choices.

Canon 24 - 70 f/2.8 II or III. I have the II and the same camera. Superb combo.

This depends on what he wants to take. On a full frame I take a Tamron 28-300mm if I go out with one camera and one lens, but with a &d (not full frame) a Tamron 18-300mm might work bit the18-300 is slower in focusing so for action it is not good.

Depending on budget:
1 - 24-70 f2.8
2 - 24-105 f 4.0

Canon 24-105L would be a perfect companion to the 100-400.

For a Canon crop sensor, the best choice is the 15-85 EFs lens. Wider than the 24-105L, lighter. Sharper than the 18-135 EFs lens, which would be my second choice. Had both setups and much preferred the 15-85 which has good build and very good quality. Second only to the 17-55/2.8 which is very heavy.

If you want a decently priced wide angle, the canon 17-40L is a good range on the m7dmk2. And the price is very reasonable. The 24-105L is the best walking around all purpose lens, in my opinion. It is glued to my 5dmk3 and I use it 90% of the time.

You can’t beat the 24-70 2:8 L. One of the sharpest lenses in the Canon line up.
This lens has become my go to for a lot of family and group shots.

How about a pro tailgate party shooter - what would he/she choose? Certainly you aren't suggesting a 70-200 on a crop camera for tailgating, are you?

The 15-85 is a great lens, but I think the sharper 17-40 would be my choice.
